What can you use the metal saw on?
on: March 11, 2011, 08:49:22 AM
Ok so i have got a Vic craftsman, this just about has the perfect set of tools for me with no useless tools and was the first SAK i bought but i would like to change to a 2 tool EDC set up, maybe a 93mm Alox and smaller 91mm. Anyway It has the metal saw but i have not used it and to be honest im too scared to use it as im not sure what it can be used to cut. Just looking at the teeth it looks far to easy to stuff them up from cutting one item and it almost seems like a gimmick tool but hopefully im wrong. I just cant see how a stainless steel metal saw would be very good. So what can you safely cut with it and roughly what thickness? What have you guys used the saw for and have you experienced any teeth damage?

I used it to cut aluminum tubes, about 1,5 inch thick. It worked, but if possible get a real metal saw for tasks like this, it just takes too much time.

The metal file/saw is case-hardened steel, coated with a hard chromium plating.

I wouldn't use it on hardened steel myself but I've filed plenty of other things without issue: wood, plastics, copper, mild steel, aluminium.....

I've used one to cut lots of PVC pipe and conduit, as well as enlarging holes in the back of plastic wall boxes for cable jacks.
It is also useful for cutting aluminum parts and I cut a steel rod with it one time.  Not very fast however!

I think someone needs to make you a mod with just the metal saw and hook. Then you report back here what you can use them for! :D :D :D

I can't tell you how many times the metal saw has got the boobie out of a ringer ! Last time was cutting out a sink strainer basket that was both oxidized to the point it leaked , and was well and truly seized .

Copper and brass should be fine. Soft steel like nails and such should be no problem, either.

I have used it to cut nails. The hammering kind , not the finger kind.  :tu:

My Champion metal saw has cut 1/4-20 SS machine screws, 1/2" EMT, 1/4" copper and stainless pneumatic tubing, keyed(notched) electrical knock outs for 30mm push buttons, among many other tasks. In a pinch, worked evey time. No SAK or MT is a true replacement for a quality, dedicated tool. Like most tools, it is limited not only by it's own inherent deficiencies, but more so by the operators skill, outlook, experience and creativity as well.
Yeah, you right...
