Phone Geeks... which Droid am I looking for?
on: February 13, 2011, 03:52:03 PM
Right, my mobile provider (Orange) is seemingly nagging me non-stop to upgrade/change phones (so they can tie me into another 18m contract)

I'd REALLY like to get a droid. However I can't justify spending 100eur+ (most of the droids seem to be 200+ even with my points) on a phone I use relatively little and paying the minimum 20eur/month contract to boot (I pay less now).

My last 2 phones have been Samsung, while I'm not unhappy with them, I wish I could use more customized widgets, hence the hankering for a 'droid

Things I'd expect my 'droid to have: touchscreen, WIFI, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD slot.

Any thoughts on a decent budget 'droid?

I have a Droid 2 Global.  Excellent phone.  Does all the stuff you mentioned.  Plus it can be tethered to a computer with PDANet.  Both physical and touchscreen keyboard.  It is fairly big.

The other hot Droid is Droid X.   It's even bigger, but has a bigger better screen and is designed to stream media well.  No physical keyboard however.

Both work well, but neither are cheap

The Droid I'm considering is the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant:

How about Huawei Titan U8800? It’s gotten good reviews and it’s cheap. But when it comes to Droid phone I would recommend a Desire or Desire Z

looks like I'm out of luck there...

Samsung I9000 (GALAXY S1) 300+eur
HTC Desire 250eur

they only seem to have very basic Huawei phones.

Very tempted to jump to a new provider like Vodafone, they seem to have loads of better offers, and to be honest, Orange has always been a bit poor.

I have the original droid...great phone imo. The droid x was just to big for me. The droid two is a better version of my phone...faster processor, better laid out keyboard, better battery life, plus all the things you wanted above.

Im on here a lot while on wifi at work ::) :D

Vodaphone and Verizon have some sort of deal together in the US markets, fwiw.

The only decent-ish Android phone at that price I know off is the Samsung Galaxy 3. Don't know if its available over there though and have never owned/used one. :-\

I'm thinking about jumping to Vodafone, some 'droids they're offering:
Samsung Galaxy 3 http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i5800_galaxy_3-3395.php
HTC Wildfire http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_wildfire-3337.php
Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x8-3403.php

Each for 0eur, plus a decent enough voice/data plan (15/month until 2012, then 25/month for remainder of 18month contract)

I think the SE X8 is going to win, it has way better screen resolution, the others are equal or lesser to my current Samsung s5230 http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_s5230_star-2739.php

Seems the only downside is SE's refusal to upgrade past Android 2.1 :<

hammer dropped, switching to vodafone, and motorola defy on the way!

my last 2 phones were samsung, and before that a motorola v360 which was quite decent...

Can't wait to fire up the droid!

I think you'll do fine with the Defy. If it's built anything like my wife's Milestone then you'll be ok, that thing could stop a bullet!!

Just got myself a San Francisco (known as a ZTE Blade most other countries). Having a great time installing ROMs amd playing around with it

Phone arrived yesterday while I was at work, so I picked it up today... still need the sim card for it, want to play! My switchover date is March 30th... and my old provider sim doesn't seem to work in it :(
