108mm Mod
on: March 15, 2011, 02:52:10 PM
I am working now on 108mm Mod:

The Idea is simple - adding OH-PE-blade from 111mm Sentinel to Old GAK.
It could be described like "OH-Mouser", but of course it is no Mouser, just it has two main blades from those one has OH-opening and lock. (Maybe someone here remembers my OHunter GAK Mod with two main locking blades + gutting blade.)

Most of the hard (metal) work is done...
The parts now are put together on screws to see if it would work. It works...
Now I just need to do some finish works. Then I´ll put it together and put scales on.

Some pics will come soon... well MAYBE soon... After drilling and filing, I am just too lazy to finish it.

But I have some question about order of layers to you:
(If you could imagine that.)

Holding the knife in right hand:
Version A:
Bottom layer - Main blade
Middle layer - OH-blade
Top layer - Combo-tool from 108mm (openers+saw+file)

Problem of Version A: The thumb can get harder to OH-hole to open the OH-blade (which is in the middle) because of saw and the fact, that OH-blade gets deeper between scales to hide the tip in closed position.
Solution: Filing down a bit from the back of the saw of Combo-tool – but not too much, because there is a file on it.
(But the OH-blade is quite easy to open with point-finger from bottom and finish opening with thumb.)

Version B:
Bottom layer - Main blade
Middle layer - Combo-tool from 108mm (openers+saw+file)
Top layer - OH-blade

Problem of Version B: In this combination the opening of OH-Blade is easier. But it is harder to get open the Combo-tool because it is harder to get there with nail, because there is OH-Blade too near.

So what you think?
Which Solution looks better for you and why?
Do you have some ideas?
And what is the best way to make hole in the scales for a pin?

Pics please, I'm thinking of doing something very similar to this. My concern right now is heat from the drilling out of the pivot hole weakening the temper on the combo tool. Particularly if you have any shots showing the any reshaping the combo tool to get it to engage the backspring, and what backspring you used.

I am not sure if I understand you right. I did none reshaping of the 108mm  combo-tool (that one with SAW).
I just redrilled it to 3mm rivet and used the same backspring for it. Pics will come later...

No reshaping? My plans just got easier! :drink:

I was asking for pics if there was any reshaping, but it sounds like just open the hole up and it will drop into the 111mm frame. Excellent. And some donors get here tommorrow...

You said: "it will drop into the 111mm frame."? ? ?  Then it is another mod as I do!

I said in my first post in this topic, that I am working on 108mm Mod ("adding OH-PE-blade from 111mm Sentinel to Old GAK.").
I reshaped and shorted:
- the spring of OH blade from 111mm Sentinel to get it into the 108mm frame .
- the Linerlock from 111mm to get it into 108mm frame
(Liner-lock reshaped and resized from 111mm frame to 108mm frame works and is functional.)
I shorted down the OH blade from 111mm knife cca about 0,5mm - just a little bit to get it to 108mm scales and not to be longer than 108mm scales.

I promise, that I will finish this mod today. Pics will be on Monday. I got a name for it: Patrick.  :D

IMO, as this is a mod to include the OHO blade, then I'd make the OHO blade the priority; so option B for me. :tu:

Thanks for the tip.

I will have to decide this dilema today, but just after that yesterday´s "green drinks" leaves my head.  :drink:  :D

Some pictures from the process that I took a few days ago from the process:

*rereads*
*head desk*

The first time I read it, I read it correctly and thought "how is he going to shorten the blade... let me reread that." And I turned it backwards in my head. I can't even blame green beer.  I'm losing my mind, that's all.

I'm still interested in this project however.

So... I am sorry I wasn´t able to do it... I totally ruined it ... sorry...  ???

... just joking...

Here it is...

St Patrick´s Day Mod (OH 108mm)

I finished this mod a day after St Patrick´s Day – so it is the name for it. Columbus had a ship with Name Santa Maria, so why couldn´t one small green knife had a name St Patrick´s Day ? :D

I was playing with it a long time. Finally I decided for Variation A - with the OH-Blade in the middle layer. I am leftie, so from time to time it is good to have it able to open in both hands
(what in the case that my right hand would be injured or something and unable to open the knife?)

Here is a picture of OH-Solo (or 108mm Sentinel?) Anyway – nice looking knife, but it was just "passing phase", maybe next time... :D
- Solo

And here is the final Mod: Without Crossbow but with Umbrella. :)

Paradoxly the blade in "shorter knife" is a bit "longer" when meassuring from the end of the scales. :) It is because the rivet in 108mm frame is closer to the end of scales as at 111mm frame:

St Patrick´s Day Mod with Trifolium Classic:
