Looking for a SOG toolclip
on: November 03, 2007, 11:28:01 AM
My father's been carrying a SOG Toolclip, the fullsize, for about the last decade. At least he was, until the thing finally broke. He's got a birthday coming up, and I've been trying to find him one. So far I've lost an Ebay auction and sent $70 to a site that's too lazy to change their catalog. I'm looking for one in 80-100% condition.
If you happen to have one for sale, or know of someone who does, I'll gladly snap it up. Have they become collector's items? For whatever reason I thought there'd be more of them out there.
Failing that, if anybody has suggestions on a good knockoff I'm all ears. I remember AG Russell made one, but I haven't found that either. The only multitools I've seen in that design were some Frost Cutlery garbage.
Thanks

Howdy jeo567, and welcome to MTorg!

The ToolClip is over 15 years old now and becoming more scarce every year. Seems like there is always one or two available on eBay, but the price seems to be going up, not down.  :(

I don't know of anyone who has one for sale at the moment.

The AG Russell model is even rarer than the ToolClip. That being said, your father doesn't want one anyhow. The tool is smaller than the SOG, and the plier jaws especially are too small to be of much use. I'd advise holding out for the ToolClip.

Maybe you'll have better luck with this one here: http://cgi.ebay.com/SOG-Tool-Clip-multi-tool-knife_W0QQitemZ190169334517QQihZ009QQcategoryZ88920QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Have you tried contacting SOG about a repair job on the original?  That might be a more viable option that trying to find another one.  Our in house SOG rep might be able to offer some suggestions as well.

Frankly, for an old, discontinued tool, I think eBay may be your only real hope.  You could try contacting one of our banner advertisers, Felinevet (felinevet@sosakonline.com) as he often has old and odd stuff lying around, although his focus is usually Swiss Army Knives.  Worth the cost of an email though!  The good news is that the $70 or so that you'd spend on a ToolClip (if you can find one) is about the same as you'd spend on any other quality multitool.

About the only other tools I can think of with the permanent plier design that would be available is the hard to find Wenger SwissGrip or the new Columbia River Knife and Tool Zilla.  While these may both be similar to the ToolClip, there really isn't much of a direct replacement.

I'd contact SOG about a repair/replacement before I spent money on another tool.

What exactly broke on the tool?

Thanks everybody. Especially j-sews, I'm bidding on that one right now.
As far as the one he has is concerned, the part that broke was the spring on the back that puts tension on the knife blade. Think SOG still services these?
Hopefully i can figure something out, because the Zilla tool doesn't have enough tools, and the Swissgrip is even harder to find.
Once again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I don't know if SOG will be able to service it or not, but I have sent the link to this thread to SOG, so Chris should be along to fill us in.  I wouldn't expect to hear from him until Monday though.

These forums are more multi tool oriented, maybe that's why :multi:

Does knifeforums have a multi forum?  I scrolled through their list of forums for about 45 minutes and never reached the bottom :ahhh

KF has a multitool forum now- they opened it about 6-8 months ago.  It's right above the Secret Order of Swiss Army Knives in the General Section.

I don't see any disparaging remarks about KF?

I don't think anyone here is against any of the other forums, seeing as how almost everyone here is active on at least one or two others.  We all have our preferences, and for tools, well go to the tool people.  I am certain he'd have gotten better knife advice on Knifeforums or Bladeforums.

best advice I can offer at this point is if you want send it in and we can look at the tool and see about repairing it.  For information about warranty please see the warranty page on the SOG site (http://sogknives.com/service/warranty/).
