I need a good reason
on: November 04, 2007, 06:33:35 PM
Some time ago, my best friend Pete died of liver failure.  I am still pretty upset about it, and at the time I thought I could never go through that again with another dog, even though I had (and still have) another one.  Time heals all wounds, and while I don't think I will ever get over or past Pete's passing, I am getting the urge to get another dog.  Chinook is almost 10 now, but has many good years left in him, and he still loves to play with other dogs, and he can play as rough as any of them.  He's in excellent shape for a dog half his age, and he can (and does) run rings around dogs even younger than that, so I am not too worried about it.  He's also pretty laid back, and I don't think he'd mind a new dog moving in.  A few weeks ago he ran and wrestled the crap out of an 11 month old pitbull/boxer cross named Truman.

Kim and I will probably be moving in the next year or so, and we had planned on getting a dog at the same time, to introduce both dogs to the new house at the same time in order to quell any possible territorial issues, and I can think of many other very good reasons not to get a new dog right now.  This doesn't seem to mean a whole heck of a lot to me, as the urge to get another one is building, and since I usually rescue shelter dogs, I can't help but think about how many great dogs are still homeless right now because I have too many excuses.

So, I need someone to give me a good reason why I should not get another dog right now.  I'm finding it harder and harder to stop myself from visiting the local animal shelters, and I know my wife- if we both go, she'll find one she likes (she'll actually want all of them, but one will stand out for her) and we'll bring him home.

This has been building for a while- it's not the new tool itch, where I wait a week until I get fascinated with something else and forget all about the one I "had to have."

Please stop me before I adopt again!

I used to visit the county animal shelter.  But, it became too sad a place to go because I wanted to adopt them all.

One dog at a time is enough for me.  When I think about owning multiple dogs, I think about how their leashes and chains would get tangled up.

Think about all the possible complications what if the dog you adopted has behavioural troubles and fought with Chinook
What about house training ,

Getting the new dog adjusted to your home even if it was well trained and soSmurfpillsed always takes time,my border collie Minnie is a great dog good with people but hates other dogs due to past abuse she took a good 2 to 3 months to settle down and stop reacting and start trusting our family me in particular We strongly believe her abuser was male I wouldn't describe him as a man because anybody who would hurt a helpless little dog ain't a man .I couldn't find the words for him (THEY WOULD BE CENSORED )

I agree, and the big reason we want to hold off until we move is because Pete carried a scar his whole life from the first night we got Chinook.  Of course, with all the stuff Pete got into, one more scar was barely noticeable!

That's the biggest reason I have to wait- introducing both dogs to a new home at the same time is the best way to introduce them on even footing.

As for finding myself with more dogs in a few months, Chinook was "modified" before I got him so that would be pretty impressive if it happened....

True- but it really doesn't matter to me- I'd keep a dozen puppies and raise them like they were my own kids!

I'd also rather have dogs than kids any day.

After doing your best for 16 years, dogs don't decide they hate you and move out.

Well, I have managed to hold off for another few days at least...  if I can keep pushing it off for another few days each time I get the urge to get a puppy, I may just make it!

It does make more sence to wait until you move, and plus with you working more now, theres a good chance that the new dog might become destructive, when you and the missus are out.

Not really- Kim works during the day and I only work nights, so that's not much of a concern.

Nice try though! :D

Hmmmm, what would Cesar do? :) You could sponsor a dog at the local shelter or make a donation. That way, you are helping a dog, just not making the commitment to own one. Besides, maybe Chinook would like just the the only dog for awhile.

We donate to the local shelter all the time.  At least if we adopted one, we'd have something to show for it! :P

Ok Def, I'm gonna say go ahead and get yourself a new puppy. It sounds like your heading that direction anyhow. So stop picking at this and get on with it. The sooner you get off the dime and rescue one of those poor pups, the sooner he/she can get off death row and start living the good life! :)

How's that?

I lost my best bud Max just two weeks ago to heart failure.  He was only 7 and I thought I had many good years of playing with him.  I had to put him to sleep which was the hardest thing in the world that I have had to do.  I still think of him everyday and still find myself looking for him in his usual spots.

Anyway, Def, I just wanted to say that I know what your going through with the loss of Pete.  I'm truly sorry.

The only thing worse than the loss of your best friend is thinking about how many more like him/her there are, living in tiny little cages, just hoping that someone will come by and give them a home.  After all, I have great dogs, and either I am exceptionally lucky, or there are lots of great dogs out there, just waiting for a good home.  I like to think that it's a lot of both.
