I've been looking to get a decent Tomahawk for taking down dead limbs for kindling, and maybe some light splitting.  As far as I can see, the Cold Steel Tomahawks are in my price range (around $30 give or take).  And does anyone know if these are made overseas?

I really like the Veitnam Tomahawk because I like military gear and history, but you cant baton with it!  The Trail Hawk looks like a good user.

Ugh, just read through some old threads about these 'hawk on bladeforums...you get what you pay for :P

I might just sell my mint Becker BK7 for money to buy an "official" American Tomahawk Company hawk...

I can never just buy an "ok" item...it's either the best or nothing with me most times...and if I can't afford it, then I don't get it until I can afford it :D

I have a riflemans hawk. It is just fine for my uses.  I have several of the Vietnam hawks but not the cold steel ones.  I have modified the head of my vietnam hawk to look more like the Lagana version with more of a blade instead of a spike.  I have added a longer handle to one of them because it makes for better camp use with its increased leverage.

Well I had a Riflemans hawk, and to be honest, I wasn't that impressed, the bevels were wrong, and the shaft was to small and needed rehandling to moment I got it >:(

Eventually I gave it to my blade smith mate (unka colin) and he turn in in to piece of art :)

So in sumary I'd say good steel, and has the pottential to be something really good, but only if you put the work in yourself ;)

I have the Vietnam Hawk and it's useless against trees.  I am certain it's good against people as it's a combat oriented hawk, and from the pictures/vids I have seen, it's great against old cars and ammo boxes! :D

I would stay away from ATC as well if I were you.  I really can't say anything in public, and I am certain the hawks are of decent enough quality, but you wouldn't catch me handing over actual money for one.

I haven't handled the new ones, but they are getting good write ups in the rags.  Of course, the rags only write good things, so that's not necessarily a glowing endorsement!

Any idea of where the SOG was manufactured?  I think the whole Fusion line by SOG is overseas stuff, which doesn't nesseccarily mean it's a bad line of tools, but I like to buy USA made stuff as much as I can...especially things I'm going to be beating on like knives and hatchets :P

You could try picking up a copy of "The Backwoodsman" magazine.  There are a lot of custom makers in there and I'd be willing to bet that you could find a great hawk at a decent price that is handmade by a real person to boot.

Wow, I think I've found it:

Made by Ranger Knives.  $150 give or take.

I might put my BK7 up on ebay and get a quick $100, sell a couple of multis*, and place my order.

hmm...rangerknives.com isn't accepting any orders, but some of their distributors have them in stock.  I was hoping to deal directly with Justin.

I read in a review of that hawk that he was redeployed or something, so maybe that's why ???

I haven't spoken to Jason in a while- it's entirely possible he's doing another tour.

As of this writing, Justin Gingrich has returned to duty with the Rangers, and is serving his country on the ground in Iraq. Due to this fact, Ranger Knives has temporarily ceased taking orders for custom models, but encourages potential customers to check with dealers who sell his product line. They are listed on the web site.

There was no date on the review...I might send whoever reads the mail at rangerknives.com an email anyways...maybe they are taking orders but didn't update the site :pok:

If not then Knifecenter might be my best bet.

That is one cool Tomahawk.  My first tomahawk looked similar to that too bad I could not find it last time that I went to my mothers house to look for it.

I actually deal only with this guy.
http://www.hbforge.com/

He has been making my Hawks for years and I got to say his prices are dead on. By the way last year he had made me a shawnee hawk with the spike and it cost me only $55.

You will get a good product also from others but not hand made and forged at that price!
