Identify this Vic...
on: November 08, 2007, 12:56:18 AM
Alright, what exactly did I find today in an old desk at work?:

"top"
-Large blade 1/2 serrated
-small blade
-Can opener/Phillips
-Bottle Opener, flathead

"bottom"
-Awl
-Phillips driver

Red scales with toothpick and tweezers.

I didn't even realize the blade was partially serrated until I got it home and opened this thing up.  And I get to use my Countycomm cleaning sticks!

Are you certain it's a Victorinox?  They didn't do any 91mm or smaller SAKs with partial serrations, but Wenger did.

Do you have pics?

It's a Vic alright...cellidor red scales, silver Vic sheild.

On the nail nick side of the blade, on the base:
Victorinox
Switzerland
Stainless
Rostfrei

Opposite side of blade, on the base:
A "plus" sign and the bow and arrow logo
Officer Suisse

I'm going to try and snap a pic right now...BRB :)

It's a partially serrated Tinker- very interesting because the serrations were obviously done by a pro, but the pattern doesn't match the Vic style pattern, which is usually a simple repeating small cut.

While not a great picture, you can see they used the same serration pattern on this 91mm Hoffritz special that they use on the SwissTools and OH models.

My initial thought is that it's a mod, but I'll post it in SOSAK and see if anyone has any other info.

Thanks for the info.  If the serrations are mod, they are damn good.

It's cool because I'd never think of buying a serrated Vic (or any other knife really) since I don't like them, but now that I have one, I think it's cool :D

Keep me in mind if you should ever decide to get rid of it...

And, as for good mods, these were put together by hand from spare parts:

top one is a custom, bottom one is real

top one is custom, bottom is real

Some modders are pretty darned good!

That Def guy sure isn't very quick is he? He should have said that the knife was a dirt common, dime-a-dozen model that he would reluctantly pay you $5 for simply because he felt sorry for you.  :pok: ;)

It's a McKinley, and there's a version of the Huntsman with a blade like that called the Ranier, as per Spork60.

So let me get this straight....an ordinary "Tinker" magically becomes a rare "McKinley" simple by having a partially serrated blade?

Yup.

Victorinox names are an oddity.  Several completely different models have identical names (Golfer anyone?) while models that are very similar have numerous different names (DAK, Soldier, Pioneer).

With that conundrum solved, I have another -

SAK "Soldier" or "Pioneer" - It has Lanyard ring, so I think Pioneer - the reamer is odd - it's like a little bit of angle. Painted red metal scales, the "+" has no Vic Shield, but the blade says Victorinox, Office Suisse - it does not have the Umbrella/Bow and Arrow symbol.

Seems quite old - is this an older pioneer? was the genuine Army issue ever made with Lanyard ring?

Yes, no, maybe and sideways.   :D

There are so many variations of each model that it's almost impossible to tell for sure, but it sounds like you have an older Pioneer.  If you can provide pics that may help, but if the main blade doesn't have a year stamp then it probably isn't a Soldier.

Some Soldiers were made with a keyring, but I don't believe they were issue models- they were for the civilian market, and as far as I know, the only place that actually had them for sale was Lee Valley Tools.

A SOSAK member named Spork60 made that one, but he doesn't make customs for other people.  He will usually help you muddle through making your own though.

Sort of.  The red ALOX was discontinued in the early 90's and had been in production since the 60's.  Red was recently reintroduced (along with many other colors) but the newer ones have the standard shield on them.

So probably at least 20 years old, but other than that-  who knows.

The blade is still thick, so it probably has not seen much use (and thus not been sharpened a whole lot)

Rightio, thanks for your help.
