Need some help with choosing a Saddleback
on: March 27, 2011, 08:24:59 PM
Ok.  I know, I never should have looked at the Saddleback Leather website.  I am absolutely stuck on getting one now, and it just so happens that my birthday is in two days.  I have been carrying a Maxpedition Jumbo for about 6 months or so, and I love it.  There is nothing about that bag that I don't like.  I just really want a Saddleback.

I am torn between the Large Satchel in Cark coffee here:
http://www.saddlebackleather.com/categories/98-Satchels-Large/products/2049-Leather-Satchel-Large-Dark-Coffee-Brown

And the Large Briefcase in Dark coffee here:
http://www.saddlebackleather.com/categories/79-Briefcases/products/1646-Leather-Briefcase-Dark-Coffee-Brown

I don't really need the space in the large briefcase, and it is going to cost around $600 to get it to me, so it seems that it may be a little out of reach at this point.  The large satchel would get me by the same way my jumbo does, so it is essentially perfect.  Problem is(I know, don't listen to what your friends say) my friends say it looks like a purse.  I have carried a bag for years, and total time spent carrying a jumbo or fatboy is about a year and a half, so I am not new to the idea of a mans carry all.   I think the Satchel may be more comfortable too, because the briefcase weighs about 6 lbs empty.   I just like the look of it so much!    I have a significant portion of the cost coming from birthday money because my wife rocks and told everyone what I wanted.  So, barring cost, what would you pick?

Ok, I made the choice.  A Large Satchel in coffee brown will be here sometime this week!

They make beautiful products. I've been looking at getting one of their wallets, but haven't pulled the trigger so far.

I have one of their wallets in Dark Coffee Brown :dd:

I absolutely love it. Can't wait to see what you think of the satchel  :ahhh

They are the sort of thing that just gets better with age and the 100 year warranty should keep you right  :tu:

Man, seeing that dark coffee brown in a user pic really makes me want it more!  I am going nuts now, waiting for the satchel to arrive.  I think I may order one of their wallets here soon as well.

The problem with the wallet is which one to choose?  :ahhh :ahhh

I think I'll be adding the small gadget pouch for my phone and a Moleskine cover  :tu:

Some of the stuff is quite pricey but then you really do get what you pay for  :salute: I am sooo impressed with the wallet; the satchel will be amazing I'm sure :dd:

I don't know Dave [the owner] but he seems like a real nice guy. You should read his story while you wait for your satchel

I actually sent an email last night querying postage for the small gadget pouch. I'll let you know how much it comes in at  :tu:

His shipping is pretty reasonable.  I paid 23 bucks for second day, 3 day was 21 bucks.  All told, the bag was $335 + $5 insurance + $23 shipping + $29 tax = $390 shipped to me.  And yes, it hurt a little.   :D

I think it will be more than worth it though.  Many pics to come.

It has arrived!  I don't have time for a proper set of pics ATM, but they will come soon.  This bag exceeds all my expectations.  I can't stop looking at it.  I am definitely buying some more Saddleback stuff soon, most likely a wallet first, then some Duffel bags later on in the year.

I would sure love to have one of their laptop bags, but I can't see parting with $400 for one anytime soon.  :(

It is a pricey affair  :-\

Do what I'm doing; satisfy yourself with the lower value goodies :D

As Dave as Saddleback says 'Buy the best, cry once'  :tu: He would say that though; makes sense as well we know

I think the suitcases look great and probably get much better with age but like Terry I don't have a spare $900

BTW for 2 small gadget pouches shipping was $20 from them to me [UK]. It's not the cheapest but not the worst either. It's via UPS; it's tracked and I assume insured. Can't wait  :ahhh :mail:

Any pics in use yet Sean?  :pok: :D

Their coming, but I'm so busy with work I can hardly find time to ogle the bag let alone photograph it.  I love this thing, best buy I ever made.  I got the small gadget pouch and the credit card wallet as well, and a notepad cover will be coming next month.  I'm addicted!

It certainly tickles the imagination.

Fortunately, so far I've managed to stay in the reality of "I rarely use Bags for EDC, and my travel gear is holding up quite well"

If I ever go diving with sharks in a sombrero*, perhaps I'll reconsider.

*That's fairly unlikely, as I sold my sombrero last year.

Hey, good for you, it means you have quite a bit more money left in your budget than me!

I do use my bag for EDC, and after two months of carrying the large satchel, I can happily say it was money well spent.  It turns into a backpack, which is convenient for me because half the time I bike to work and I never feel this thing on my back.  It acts as my briefcase, lunchbox, and manbag all in one.  Never leave home without it.

Hey Mercury - That Saddleback is one fine piece of leather!  Unfortunately, my budget won't allow me to have one at this time.  I'll just have to keep my Maxpedition Fatboy for the time being.  After checking out the Saddleback website, you've got me "needing" a piece of their leather.  It's something I'll definitely have to save for, though.

I was very fortunate that my birthday fell almost exactly at the same time I truly discovered their stuff.  My family paid for over half of my satchel.  I got the bug though, I now have a few moleskine covers, two wallets, and a bible cover.  Their stuff is addicting, but it's way worth it.  And it looks better every day you use it.  I love my leather, just as much as my favorite MT's!
