Buck Xtract
on: November 23, 2007, 08:10:47 AM
I was carrying my XTract tonight at work, and a thought occurred to me- wouldn't a Victorinox or SOG style can opener with the mini screwdriver tip be somewhat more functional than the Wenger style can opener that's on it now?  Personally I prefer this style for can opening duties, but I don't open many cans.

Maybe I'm just a drunk, or maybe it's because I work in a bar, but it seems to me that I would get more use out of a bottle opener than a can opener.  Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

I agree with you. I've carried a multitool or sak since I was 16 and I've only opened a can once or twice. But I have opened lots of bottles.

I'd suspect that there's a fond memory  in upper echelons from Buck's collaboration with Wenger on the Swissbucks.

I can honestly say I have never used the can opener, apart from once just to see how effective it was.

Bottle opener gets plenty of use though.  ;)

I personally use the can opener quite a bit, and rarely if ever use a bottle opener.

I use a can opener a fair ammount, and I use the bottle opener occasionally as well.

Personally, I prefer the Victorinox style can opener more than any others. The SOG is second because it isn't sharpened.

Yeah, try finding cans of food in a survival situation unless you brought them along yourself.

I could see it perhaps as coming in handy as a smaller second blade- but still, I don't see it as being a "survival" type tool any more than I see anything else as a survival tool.  In a survival situation you take what you can get.  If you plan for a survival situation then you also plan to have a tent, a portable heater, a Coleman stove, a crate of MRE's etc.

If you have a crate of MRE's you might also want a case of EX-LAX for obvious reasons. :)

I had an MRE for the first time last night. Not too bad, actually. The coffee was watery (probably my fault, though).
