Marks on the inside of Alox scales

I've just noticed some markings on the inside of my Alox Farmer

On the inside of one scale are 4 vertical lines and on the other scale are the same 4 lines but with a fith line running from corner to corner , like the gate method of counting where you draw a line then the fith one goes across to comple a block of five . I checked my Vic Alox Soldier and nothing but interestingly my Wenger si has four lines on one of its scales .
I'm sure one of our modders has come across this before . Any explenation ?

Clearly with it being a Farmer the marks must represent the number of Farmers that particular knife had killed prior to making it to your hands.

Or not.

When I saw I had four replies to this thread I really did think I'd have an answer lol I really do wish I had some time on my hands right now ,I seem to be rushing from one thing to another at the moment

One sound theory I've heard is that they are marks on the manufacturing dies, this way they can track which dies are getting worn and producing poor scales.

So lets say there are five dies in use at any one time, QC picks up that there are some rough scales coming out, with them being marked they then know exactly which of the dies is giving the problem.

As I said this is just a theory, but it sounds plausible to me.

My Blue Farmer has a fiver on one side. I wonder if it's part of the stamping die?

Hmm...

My Pioneer Apprentice (purchased new last year) has four hash marks on the back scale and NOTHING on the front. My similar vintage Pioneer Rancher has no marks nor does my brass-liner red Pioneer. FWIW, my 73 Soldier is also blank.

i got nothing on my pruner (red alox plain cross). i have the 4/5 lines on my 07 soldier and undated si.

but... i have an 06 si that has the 5 line but instead of a 4 line: a squiggly--shaped like a long cursive "W"-ish is on the front scale on the adjacent side where the 4 line "should" be. i suspect it's an imperfection.

also all the diagonal lines runs across from top left to the bottom right.

i'm so excited.

None of my alox knives have any markings (Farmer, Pioneer, 01 SI, undated SI). Guess I'd better go buy a bunch more knives and see if they're marked..........
