Can your knife do this ?
on: January 19, 2011, 05:04:31 PM

This is me & my Strider GB slicing single sheet toiletpaper.
The blade was sharpened on the Wicked Edge up too 600 grit diamond plus some stropping to remove the burr.
Single sheet toiletpaper is very treacherous stuff and completely unforgiving: if your edge isn't sharp enough it will tear immediately.

Slicing TP is all the rage now on BF to see how sharp your knives are. I thought I was getting mine sharp enough to do it but it was ripping. Then I got some of the more expensive TP and could go through it with a good single slice. No ripping. It's a good way to check for microchipping also. Slice through some and check your edge for any TP that stuck to it.

No and I'm kinda happy, because with my luck I would inevitably end up slicing off a thumb or something.. :P

But excellent sharening..  :tu:

I've always been an advocate of "too sharp."  In my experience, sharpening a knife down to a medium stone leaves enough of a "micro serration" leaves the knife with enough bite to cut into things.  I used to sharpen things down until the edge was a mirror finish, and I always felt that the knife didn't cut worth a damn like that because it was just too smooth.

So toilet paper is the new "arm hair test" is it?  Guess the guys on BF must all be smooth by now so it makes sense!

On a side note, this is the first ever MT.O thread that made me run to the toilet.  :D

This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

what is the knife, and what is the sharpening angle ?

The knife is an old school flat scaled S30V Strider GB tactical folder, and the sharpening angle is 30 degrees inclusive (according to the Wicked Edge knife sharpener i used for this job)
Although it is a linerlock folder it's actually a very strong one; i used it two times to bring down a small birchwood tree with it (hacking, not batoning), without any problems.
It also cuts very well, because although the blade is 4,5 mm thick, it's rather wide and quite thin behind the edge.
Only problem is it's size; that's the reason i always carried it around in a fannypack.
