As for tests- some ideas...
1) screw-driving. Phillips and Straight
2) Wire cutters. A variety of materials
3) Nuts and Bolts turning. With pliars, also commenting on ergos
4) Knife Edge. See what knife cuts best longest.
5) Saw. Time it takes to cut through some wood.

I appreciate your enthusiasm guys, but there's no way in hell that I am purchasing various force meters to measure breaking points on my tools! :D  One, I can't afford the meters and two, I can't afford to replace a bunch of broken tools!

Unless anyone has some equipment and a reasonably large expense account lying around that they aren't using, we'll be doing a low budget show!

I guess that you could rig up a simple bathroom scale and get a measure of gripping efficiency in pounds or kilos.  Then just clamp the tool down and add 100 pounds or kilos weight to the handle and take the reading on the scale and do the calculation of lbs./square in. or k/square cm.

Anyway, I dont expect anyone to break your tools.

What I'd considered doing was getting a scale similar to the ones used for fishing and using that to try and measure the force of the pliers with that.  I realize it's not as scientific, but it could work.  And, more importantly, it's within the budget! :D

Definately a great idea.  Tool Capabilities are seldom measured in their efficiency.

Using various tests it would be possible to give each tool an overall efficiency rating for its overall performance.  Assign a number of points for performance in each category and then divide them by a relevant number and get a number that is the tools rating.  Gosh, I feel like a student again. :)

You could also take a reading on the effective reach depth that a tool can reach a screw and actually drive it.  That is a characteristic that is often overlooked in a multitool.  Not all screws are on a surface that is reachable with a driver.  Tools like the leatherman Core with the extended bit can reach much deeper than say a swisstool.

I live for this thinking stuff, I wish I had a science lab so I could go about all of this stuff myself.  ThIS IS GREAT.

Actually, I measured it once and the SwissTool phillips is only slightly shorter than the one on the Core.

I guess that'll be the first Multitool Myth I bust! :P

Music-wise, I think something without lyrics would be best. Maybe jazz?

Put together a compilation of various music and make a soundtrack that you can sell at wal mart.(they have soundtracks to all of the movies there)  You could play some smooth music during most of the testing but you could play some freakin violent rip your momma to shreads and throw your baby sister in the microwave death metal during the torture tests. >:D :)

I was hoping for some original music so I don't have to pay those poor subjugated multi millionaire artists so I don't get sued....

That sounds like a job for Atomic Munch & the Fireballs!

Thanks.  We don't have any original stuff I'm proud enough to share.

We had to change our name to Tom Munch & the Atomic Fireballs recently because we were being confused with the original Fireballs band from the 60's who just happen to live about 100 miles away from us here in Colorado.

Crap... I guess I have to change all my stalker-esque posters on the wall to reflect the new name :P

Maybe you could record some new stuff for Def's TV show under a new name?  Something like "MultiTom & The Tools"  :P

I can play the trumpet! My current favorite to play is "When the Saints Go Marching In" but it's quite short. You're probably better off with the Munchketeers.

How about "The Red eyed Munchies." :)  Then again, you might be confused for a ripoff of the Black eyed peas.

Okay, guys.  Enough fun at my expense.

Maybe you could use something one of my other bands, Drive, has done.

Here are a couple clips is a clip.

I may have to mess with them to get them to work.

That second song is copywritten so I'd better pull it.  I'll find something else to post up here.

What happened here folks?

Inspired by the latest Diesel review, I want to see a Vic SwissTool, LM Core, SOG Powerlock, and Gerber Diesel showdown, complete with blood, furious managers, and maybe injured audience members. (The Swissgrip I don't include because it's too oddball for a fair fight)
