Can you recommend a book on Iwo Jima
on: April 19, 2011, 11:05:03 PM
I've read with great interest " With the old Breed " by Eugene Sledge and have now ordered " Helmet for my Pillow " by Robert Leckie but could you recommend a similar style book on the battle for Iwo Jima please .

Flags Of Our Fathers by James Bradley is excellent. Bradley's father was one of the flag raisers on Mount Suribachi, and is in the famous picture. The book deals with both the invasion and fighting on Iwo Jima, as well as the story of the three survivors in the flag raising picture (the other three were KIA) after their return home. As far as first-hand accounts of the battle, though, I'm drawing a blank at the moment.
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D
