Swisstool one hand opening blade
on: November 18, 2007, 11:06:03 AM
ducttapetech has gone and done the mod that I and I dare say many others have been too scared to attempt on our beloved swisstool . A one hand opening blade on a Swisstool  :D

Now that is a pukka job :)

I wonder if it's easy to use given the strength of the spring pressure holding the blade in ???

It's not pretty, but it looks functional.

Because of the cut away section in the side of the plier frame, and the hole in the blade, allow's you to push the blade away from the frame and open the knife blade :)

I'm still not sure how smooth it would be though, given how much force you'd need to open the blades against the spring pressure  ???

Hmm... I didn't see that cutaway. Well, it seems like a good idea but I don't think I'd have the stomach to modify my Swisstool.  :-\

You need to register for sosak first, as it's a secret sub forum (honestly) it's quite straight forward and well worth joining as a lot of members here are also over there :)

I dont know if I would want to do this, but I will say that the guy has some skills when it comes to machining. I really think he has a winner with this one.

Knifeforums s/w irritates the h-e-double hockey sticks out me because I always have to hit "Back" twice to actually go back one page. I'm using Firefox but tried IE and it does the same thing. Anyone get this?

I've never really come across any problems with KF.  The only thing I don't like is when you are trying to do searches and you have to wait a while betwwen them.

What really annoys me is that I've tried signing up under different usernames & still get the "no permission" notices.  I usually try to go to links without signing in, but that doesn't always work either.  I've given up on them.

Please post stuff over here if you'd like folks to see it - not at KF.

That can be remedied with Firefox and the proper extensions.  You didn't hear that from me though.

Really though, they seem to have gotten a bit carried away with the ads on KF. :-\

Whoops, thanks J-Sews, forgot I asked for that. Its nice I suppose, with the original blade and pin thing it could be very nice, probably really hard to open though.

Could be...although if the thumbstud were located far enough up the blade, the leverage to open it would be improved. It would take some expirementation to get it just right. (Something I'm not willing to do with my SwissTool) :P

Im very tempted to try it but I have a couple of questions:

1. Is the steel they use in Swisstools soft enough to be worked on with a Dremel or do you need proper bench tools?

2. How do you open those pins? Tap them out with a punch? Can they be put back in again or do you destroy them when you open it?

3. What are the springs etc. on the tools like inside the handle? Will they fly apart and be impossible to put back together if I open it?

The reason Im asking number 3. is because Ill have to switch the saw with the knife as Im right handed (Is there anything preventing that btw?).

The more I think about it the more impossible it looks actually

It can be cut with the proper Dremel bits. The small cylinder-shaped diamond bit would be best I think. The grit is very fine, and it does not break down like a regular grindstone bit.

2. How do you open those pins? Tap them out with a punch? Can they be put back in again or do you destroy them when you open it?

The pins have a "head" on one end. They are pushed through the hole, then mushroomed over on the other side. You need to carefully remove the head in order to punch out the pin.

3. What are the springs etc. on the tools like inside the handle? Will they fly apart and be impossible to put back together if I open it?

No problem here. Nothing flys apart.

Eeek, problem! Look closely at the tip of your saw blade when it is closed. See that little shelf of metal it stops against? Notice that there is no shelf on the knife blade side? Swapping positions of these two blades would mean grinding away the little shelf, which is virtually impossible without further disassembling the tool. That is what the guy at Knifeforums had to do. Totally disassemble the the entire handle in order to modify the parts to fit.

It can be done (he did it!) but it's a lot of work.

Hello, I just now able to log in, Def gave me the hook up. Anyways, It is not to bad to open because I ground away part of the tang of the knife blade where it rides on the spring as it open. I left enough so it will stay closed and lock open if that makes sense. Also you can use a Dremal to do the mod. Sorry to bring up an old thread, but figured I would answer a few questions about it.

Now that you've had the one hand mod for awhile, is there anything you would do different next time?

Yes I would. I think I would re profile the blade differently or just make a whole new blade. I think I would do the frame a little different too.
