Old swiss soldier variant 'Spike'
on: May 16, 2011, 07:09:49 PM

Any clues on this one would be great , what we have is basically an old soldier with just a main blade and a massive sharp edged spike

no marks on handle or blade but all dimensions are same as the soldier

Straight from ebay with no cleaning at all, I have no idea what you would use this spike for .... to long for an awl though it would make great holes in things, dont think it would be any use as a marlin spike it would rip rope to bits.

Only idea I had was ice pick ...... but I am sure someone will know exactly what its for :)

First up a group shot with a bog standard 1940 soldier and an early electrician.

then the 'Spike'

nice brass spacers at the back

Very nice! Not much help except to say that I think the ice pick guess is a pretty good one. It seems to makes sense as this is an old knife, and way back when ice picks were certainly a much used tool than they are today.

You may already have this info, but this shows up in early catalogs as a "Model 200/R" - if that helps.

I would have thought something with an ice pick would have some " bar tools" on it. Corkscrew/cap lifter
Could it be one of those belly piercing veterinary thingymadoofers?

Whatever it is ... I like it  :D

quote from the wiki

from French: alteration of trois-carré from trois (three) + carré (square) i.e, 'three-edged', triangular) is a medical instrument with a sharply pointed end, often three-sided

Never heard of a trocar. When I first saw the spike, my first thought was for making cap wells in dynamite or some other non-rigid demo. Coupled with a pair of linesman's pliers with a crimp, it wouldn't be the worst start to a non-electric demolitions tool kit I've ever seen.
