Military Issue.
on: May 19, 2011, 10:25:20 PM
Following on from this excellent thread in the Swiss forum; http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,28009.0.html  I'm curious as to what various Armed forces around the world issue to their troops.  I know the info is scattered around the forum but I'd like to see if we can gather it together in one thread. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Standard issue for the Canadian military was a Gerber MP600 for quite a while, I'm not sure if it's still the case.

The Gerber is still the standard issued multitool for the CF. Certain trades also get issued a SOG Powerplier in lieu of the Gerber.

Hey, no sane soldier is actually going to carry it in the field. Why waste good money on BO?

Austrian forces supply a Glock fighting knife (blunt and ugly), a Glock folding shovel and a Steyr AUG gun.

We do NOT have an official SAK or MT for all soldiers, but some pioneers get LM tools (Blast or some old abuses PST that are still in use)

The US Army issues a Gerber MT to its Soldiers, not sure which model.  There may be other tools also.

I'll email my son and find out what he is carrying in Iraq right now.

Yes please that would be interesting .

I know the British Army used LM Cores but now that they are discontinued I'd like to know what they are issued now .

I Skyped with my son yesterday.  He showed me the Gerber MP600 that he was issued, but due to the poor video quality I couldn't tell if it was the same as the civilian MP600's.

He uses it daily for many tasks and is glad to have it.  He said that they were not issued any other pocket type tools. That surprised me because he is a Cavalry Scout.  Scouts are trained to be the recon asset for their unit which requires them to be in close proximity to the enemy, separate from the rest of their unit with little support or no for extended periods of time. I could think of all kinds of tools that would be valuable in that situation.

I described the Leatherman MUT to him and he was very interested.  I wouldn't be surprised if he buys one when he gets back to the USl

My one brother who is in the Army, was issued a Gerber BO MP600 with a tactical MOLLE sheath.  My other brother who is in the Marine Corps, said that they weren't issued any multi-tools, but were told to buy one.  He said that most Marines carry Leatherman Charge AL's, ALX's, and Waves because that is what they sold at the PX.

Hey Kids!

I've been delving in my government's secrets, etc.

And here's what I've found - nothing immediately useful, but speculation abounds!

From Feb 09 to may 09 - a contract from Germany for a multitool pocket rescue tool.  - listed under "aircraft equipment"
from oct 08, to oct 11 - a local contract (could still be an importer) for multitool, folding, black. - "toolkits"
from oct 08 to dec 08 - what appears to be the same contract as above, with a pricetag of $2,500,000.
from may 11 to jun 11 - local contract for multitool, folding, pocket, - "tools and machinery" - $800,000
from oct 07 to nov 07 - a local contract for a multitool, pocket rescue tool, folding. - "Safety Equipment and Supplies"
Jul 05 - 100 x "5110 66 145 6458" - "kitchenware"

Here's a good one, Pay attention!
Sep 08 to Dec 08 - local contract - "multitool, folding, pocket swisstool, black, special issue for armed forced, nylon pouch, pliers, blades, screwdrivers, reamer, punch, can opener, cap lifter, metal wood saws, and wood chisel" - $400,000,

So, somewhere out there, there are a bunch of "military issue" multitools for Australia.
Only one of those is immediately obvious as to what it is.
(we might be able to guess that the big "multitool, folding, black" contract is the Schrade Toughtools.)

I'd be interested in finding out what the German aircraft kit multitool is!

Someone cleverer than me might be able to work out what the 100x NSN number is.

There is paperwork for everything.

Apparently not...

Also, chewing gum, cardboard boxes, "milk, cream and yoghurt" for every individual base, bread for every individual base, groceries, office labeling machines, etc.

Hmm, Military Issue Sandwiches are probably beyond the scope of this thread however.

One interesting thing: The majority of Aussie rations are supplied from New Zealand (except for the chocolate and chewing gum, apparently)

However, the majority of the New Zealand army's rations are supplied from Aus.

There must have been at least TWO contracts for Digger SwissTools, as we've seen them with both '98 and '05 plier heads.

Good point.

I suppose they could have used up old parts to fill the contract...who knows.

7350-66-101-0231 is the NSN for a 250ml Gravy Boat.

Isn't that handy to know?

There's record of Surefire Helmet lights & D cell maglights.
