Finding the discontinued multitools
on: May 19, 2011, 03:40:01 AM
I was just wondering how the rest of the gang here gets the hard to find tools?  I seem to have the best luck at gun shows but how about the rest of you all. Do you use ebay, amazon, craig's list, or others?  I see some of the rare ones on these places but do any of you have any success in nabbing any of these?

I snagged a LM Super Tool 200 off Ebay a couple weeks ago for under $35 shipped. Ebay takes patience and perseverance, though. And luck; in my case it was a used tool in good condition with a Buy It Now price of $29.

I have gotten most of my stuff from US Ebay BUT a significant amount of rare birds I have gotten with the help of members here on the forum. The trade & for sale section here are a goldmine & do not forget EDCSOURCE http://www.edcsource.com/ , good luck mate & hold onto that wallet  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :D :D :D

eBay is a good source, but airballrad is right, it's a bit of an undertaking to get the right deal. Sometimes you'll see something you want, and a few people start a bidding war, making the price outrageous.

For example, the other week I came across a new discontinued Leatherman sheath, didn't need it, but if it would have gone for a price near the starting bid it would have been a great deal. Then a day before the auction ended, people started throwing money at it, and the price became ridiculous. Which happens, after all it was an auction, but in this case another seller had more than ten of the same item available for a "buy it now" price that was half what this one went for.

I find a lot of discontinued (generally Leatherman) at old camping/gun/surplus stores.

They do slow business, and still have ancient stock on the shelves. Albeit at rather painful prices.

I also keep an eye on pawn shops (usually good for Multis, they tend to overvalue SAKs though)
and markets/boot sales etc (where I tend to find decent deals on SAKs of various ages, along with other old tools, zippos, etc)

And there's always trading here.

Yeah, I know of one Army/Navy Surplus store in town that has a NIB Mini Tool for $51, a pair of Recoils, NNB for $40/each, and an original Super Tool, NNB, for $40. :/  I managed to snag a NNB Pulse, however, for $10 from a different pawn store the other day. :D

You US guys are lucky when it comes to multitools, we others have to hunt them down on eBay or forums. There are still good deals to be found, I bought a still in package KF4 for $36+shipping.

...The trade & for sale section here are a goldmine ...
 goldmine, abyss, who would know.   :ahhh So many good deals here, I often find it hard to resist buying something.

Oh, I was just asking because I sold one for around that a few weeks ago and it would have been cool if it were mine you bought.

Oooooh... If I didn't already have one, I'd be all over that. Even though my wife would kill me.  :twak:

Still, I'm sure it'll find a good home. Lots of people want (another) one of those...

That's why I'll be selling it.  I already have one and the wife walked by right as the auction ended!
