Multitools + Liner Locks
on: July 05, 2011, 01:40:50 AM
Seems like they go together like peanut butter and jelly, don't they? I feel sorry for the folks saddled with silly rules about no locking blades. :-\ To my thinking, the liner lock is one of the best things that ever happened to the world of multitools. :tu: No fumbling around with two hands for a button or a slider switch, just depress the liner and flick the blade closed. Slick!

The first multitool (that I know of) with a liner locking knife blade was the A100 from Kershaw. It had a thumbstud for one hand opening, and a lock tab with a staked ball bearing for smooth movement.

Not the first, but perhaps the most famous liner locker is the Leatherman Wave. It came along about a year after the Kershaw, and uses a thumbhole to open the blade instead of a thumbstud. :)

Since then there have been many multitools with liner locks, more than I can think of. And in addition to knife blades, a whole host of other implements have been given the liner locking treatment:

There have been liner locking screwdrivers, from Gerber and other makers....

...and liner locking can openers, like this one on a Buck X-Tract:

Speaking of X-Tracts, on the FIN model the can opener was replaced with a liner locking scissors. :)

But it doesn't stop there; this tool made for mariners and marketed by Myerchin has a liner locking marlin spike.

And for fisherman, the Tackle Tool even has a liner locking fish hook disgorger.

It's been over ten years now since Victorinox brought out the SportRatchet tool with it's liner locking ratchet

But the craziest liner locker of them all must surely be the liner locking ice scraper on the Vic AutoTool! :D :D

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I see them on eBay every now and then. They've been going for around $70.00 lately.

Agreed. Every time I pick up my old Uncle Henry, and try to close it without thinking, I always find my thumb flicking across the handle, looking for the liner.

Very interesting history  :tu:

I like that Kershaw!

I have a question though, is it legal to carry a Wave (or other MTs with one hand opening locking blade(s)) in Germany or bring one into there? Because I might visit a relative there in the future and would like to bring my Wave.

Good thread Bob.   :tu:  All this time I  the wave was first with the liner lock. Thank you for correcting my wrong historical assumption.   :)

How about the wenger Rangers? Or, are they relatively new? The older victorinox, I believe had a sidelock, not a Linerlock.. right;

It's terrible. The absolute least reliable lock design ever invented, and they use it on everything.  >:(

+1 for the Skeletool  :tu:

I really love the look of that Myerchin with its locking marlin spike even though
I have no use for a spike
Everything’s adjustable

Liner locks are perfectly reliable when used properly.  Unless you're stabbing or prying with a liner lock knife (things you should never, ever do with folding knives anyways) liner locks will last years.

Thanks gents. :) I just got to fooling around with the X-Tract's yesterday and started thinking about how many different liner-locking devices were out there. There's a bunch! (even without counting knife blades!) :D A couple more I thought of after posting are on the Multitasker Ultralight tools. CLICKY One model has a liner locked awl, and the other has a liner locked carbon scraper tool. :)
