1955 Prize
on: May 28, 2011, 06:33:25 PM

I won the runner up prize at the UK Meet (guess the bouncers weight   >:D  )

Which was kindly donated by Allen via Zed  :salute:

It was a 1955 BAK with a broken back spring
I spent a couple of day in the garage messing around and this is what I ended up with

A big pile of bits  ;)

Rubbing down the blade on 240 grit  :tu:

Rubbing down the blade on 400 grit  :tu:

I love it when a plan comes together   :D

I think I should have tried heating up the bail before adjusting it

And although the pictures look great its not so shiny in real life
And I need to work a bit more on the brass pins they have slightly sharp edges
And the one through the bail needs to be tightened up a bit (the brass washers are a little loose) but I'm worried that if I tighten it too much I won't be able to open the blade..... maybe one day  ;)

Mat  :salute:

I don't know if you are familiar with this BAK Mat but it started life as a two layer  BAK,

I removed the tin opener tool, the broken back spring and the divider
Then put the good back spring together with the blade in a one layer 'BAK'
I should have done more pics

So I didn't actually have to make anything, its just like playing with Lego  :D

The one below is the same model (the spring is broken on the tin opener   ::) )

I thought you had fabricated a new spring , not nearly as clever as I thought Tony  :( :( :(  :P :D :D :D.

You have a VERY cool single layered BAK , still GREAT work mate   :salute: :salute: :salute:

BTW the way the middle liner extends on BAKs(2 layered) , was that a intentional screw driver or scraper

Excellent job mate  :tu:

One of my (very many) projects that I can never find the time to get round to is putting together an old Sheffield stockman. I got the rough parts (treated unfinished blades, and rough stamped liners with brazed bolsters) years ago and they've just sat in a bag in a drawer waiting for me to find the time. If I can do half as good a job with that as you did with this, I'll be very happy.

I have spent a decent amount of time restoring the edge on a VERY blunt Aussie BAK today.
Hope my one does not bite me  :D :D

Top brass bashing Tony :D  Glad we're getting you over your fear of peaning :P

Shame about the bail, do you reckon it'll hold?  If I come across a spare on my travels I'll send it your way :tu:

Here's my 1953 BAK with a broken back spring  :)

Not easy to take to pieces without damage :ahhh

What shall I add?

With added Brass and Orange Micarta  :tu:

Lining up the bits, that brass is very shiny

Peening over the end of a brass rod to make the rivets  ;)

This is going really well  :tu: one rivet fitted at the front ... blade? …...bugger I forgot to put the blade in  :-[

Sharpen the end of the rod/rivet to get it through all the layers   ;)

Right hand rivet done, middle cut off ready to peen  :)

this is what it looks like now  :salute:

I still need to work on all the rivets as my peening needs more practice

Yep I wanted to keep the divider with the screwdriver but it didn't look right to me sitting next to the 'scales' which is why I added the Brass and Micarta  :)

I'm not sure if its a bit over the top with the orange  I can't make up my mind yet  :-\
