Found Out Some Interesting Cost Information
on: June 24, 2011, 07:10:58 PM
Yesterday I was over at the Leatherman FaceBook page, and someone asked about the cost for getting a Leatherman blade sharpened. And it turns out that it costs $9.95 to have it done by Leatherman ($5.00 for the sharpening, and $4.95 for return postage).

I had always assumed that they were like Kershaw, and that sharpening was part of the warranty. I guess it's because that everything I have ever sent in for repair has always come back with either new blades, or a fresh edge on the old ones.

I don't know about Kershaws, having never owned one, but I do know Benchmade also charges a nominal fee for this service as well. It's only practical; this is a small price to pay for someone who wants a professional to put a sharp edge back on their blade, but is enough to prevent abuse from people who will overuse such a service because it costs them nothing.

It does make sense to charge something, helps keep retail prices down and all that.

Yea, Kershaw's policy is pretty straight forward when it comes to sharpening, "We provide this additional service free of charge". Although they do explicitly state that this service is only for Kershaw blades (which probably means that at some time or another a rocket scientist must have sent in another brand knife for sharpening :bnghd:)

If it's in for repair anyway they bring the tool up to spec while they have it, including sharpening. At least, that's been my experience and what I've heard from others. But if you're just sending it in for a new edge, the charge applies.

I sent my sideclip in awhile back for a good tune up and asked for a sharpening, they didn't charge a dime and it came back with a perfect edge for free.

Spyderco charges $5 return shipping only to sharpen the blade up for ya. But its if got broken serrations, tip, or anything like that its $20 to fix plus the $5 return shipping.

Well,  I posted here awhile back that I was going to do a sideclip polishing project and bought the necessary bits to disassemble the tool.  All dandy, except polishing a sideclip with a dremel is ill advised and proved to be to tedious for me with a lackluster result, so I decided to put the tool back together and botched a fastener.  I asked LM to repair it and bill me because it had nothing to do with warranty, but they didn't bill me and sharpened the blade for free as well.
