Another helmet added to my small collection.

I found this at a garage sale of all places. Got it dirt cheap as well. After doing a bit of research, this complete M1 American helmet clearly got a master sergeant insignia painted by someone who didn't know what the rank looked like. I do not care, as I got it very cheap.

Now all I need to find is a Canadian Brodie Mark II helmet. They are a bit difficult to source.

Great score!

I've been meaning to get a Federal Signal FH-2 fire helmet (a European-style design that only lasted for a couple years in the '70s) and one of the silver Gallet helmets used by the French fire services. No room, though.

As a sign artist/pinstriper I am often called on to paint helmets and over the years have accumulated quite a few over the years. With the abandonment of helmet laws in Michigan I have found myself with quite a few that were painted to be sold.
One of the things I always wanted to do up was a fireman's helmet and last year I found a nice original one at the local flea market for a mere ten dollars.
I noticed that someone had painted the lettering on the front and also inside the helmet and I became a bit curious about it.
It read,"To the "Collector's Item" from Mike Snyder and the Shemya Fire Department." The guy I got it from said it came out of a collection his uncle had and he was selling them off for his aunt after he had passed away.He also said he thought it might have been from Alaska.
Curious I Googled the name and came up with two places of the name:one in Indiana(not far from here)and the other near the westernmost tip of the Aleutian Island chain. Reading up on the Aleutian island I found that it was a refueling point for bombers hitting Japan during the second World War and later became an actual military base although they were a bit hesitant about what they actually did there.Supposedly it was a listening post and airport in the cold War against the soviet Union.
I still don't know what the meaning of the inscription inside the helmet means or who the people were but I decided against destroying the original finish until I can find out more. I've enclosed some pictures of the helmet and also a T-shirt design I lifted off the net showing the location of the base. Hopefully one day I will know the story.

Here is another one I picked up years ago because I liked the art work. Done by someone named Silas Knowles he was apparently a native of this area and I guess a WWII veteran. I still cannot find any info on him although I still try.

Chako, your helmet reminds me of a scene in an old movie, wish I could remember what one, in it after a battle and out of necessity a soldier was promoted on the spot and they improvised his new insignia onto his uniform, something to think about
