An Awakening (of sorts)
on: June 26, 2011, 12:54:01 PM
I have recently taken delivery of a PS4 which I reckon is a fairly clever bit of kit. I like that fact that because of its size I can keep it in my fob pocket with my coins . It also opens out to a surprisingly useful (size wise) pair of pliers. Its small size means that the knife isn't terribly big which I find to be less than desirable. I think that if it was maybe 1/2" longer then the knife length would be better but then the whole thing wouldn't be so small. The file is a bit small to be really useful and should have a diamond file side if its usefulness is to be delivered. So I guess its a betwixt and between, neither a fish nor a fowl in my eyes.

BUT

after fiddling with it for a couple of weeks I had need to use my Swiss Spirit. Now I know the Spirit and the PS4 shouldn't really be compared but it just opened my eyes as to just how good the Spirit is. I have a Wave, a Gerber 400 and a KF4 and the Spirit runs rings around them all. They all have their own particular design characteristics (one handed opening of the Wave and the flick of the wrist pliers on the Gerber which I think is brilliant) which set them apart from each other but I reckon the Spirit is a piece of design genius. If there is to be one complaint it would be that it is so shiny and a bit slippery on occasions. Actually it really looks too good to use. And no I can't afford (justify) a BO Spirit so I will stick with what I have.

I am well aware that there are quite strong views about the range of tools available and people with their feet strongly in one camp. I guess mine are pretty strongly in the Spirit camp. You others can't help it if you are wrong.

Cheers

It is indeed hard to beat the quality and precision of the Vic tools. :salute:

Really the only complaint I hear (from some people) when I show them a Spirit is how difficult it is to get the blades open without stout fingernails. :-\
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

my only real complaint on the swisstool was the polished drivers that slip and it seemed pretty hefty, i will give a sprit a go one day but then i said that about the swisstool and didnt keep it too long  :D
