How do you find your perfect sak?
on: July 01, 2011, 04:04:44 PM
First off, as has been acknowledged elsewhere on the forum you will always be biased towards your 'first love' where multitools are concerned.  For me that will be Leatherman.   :o :o

Please dont stop reading yet.

Recently I bought a Huntsman on impulse as I got a good deal at the local store.  The major plus point to saks for me is that they are seen as warm and cuddly, something your grandfather and farther carried and so not a knife.  They also fit the UK legal tag without any hangups too.
The tools on the huntsman work well too.  However there are tools missing from its line up for me.

I would like the tools the huntsman has (pref with the awl to one end)
A file
A Phillips (again at one end).

I have tried the Vic web site and the best they came up with is the Champ.  for me the Awl is in the wrong place, Plus there are a lot of tools there which I do not need.  With all the different models of sak out there. surely a better fit to my needs exists.

Any and all help appreciated.

Thanks

DIY... I had similar requirements and that's how it happened ;)
There is little problem with in-line awl... it is located only on a 93 mm models, it's a shame >:(

You could try hunting down a Victorinox Master Craftsman

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Master+Craftsman

It has all the tools you ask for but is hard to find.

Another alternative is the Victorinox Craftsman which adds pliers.

Farmer/Pruner mod? At least you get a great awl in the right place :)

My fave mod is this one: (Mr'Bee's of course)

You've opened a right can of worms here :salute:

As the guys have been hinting, the only full solution is modding, otherwise you end up with tons of saks(not like any of us  )

Mind you, even then you'll not end up being completely happy

ps any way I can fit a LM but driver into a 91mm sak???
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I am also in the pursuit of a "perfect" for me SAK, and found that getting a modified one is the way to go.  Since I really hope to only have one SAK and not do future modifications, I am trying to hire out the work, and have a few people that have offered services.  Makes it not a cheap option, but as I have found out with my other hobbies its more cost effective to just get something tvhat you want the first time rather then ending up buying several different ones, only to then later go back and spend the dough on the one that actually meets all of your needs.

What's so great about a LM bit driver?  The Cybertool has a perfectly good bit driver of its own!

I like my Ranger - has the file & saw, has an awl (but not on the end, my Farmer is my only SAK with an awl on the end) and I find that the small screwdriver on the can opener works with most Phillips screw heads.

If you went with a custom build then the Farmer awl would have to be the best one I've ever seen and I agree that the Phillips needs to be on the end, it's damned awkward using the one in the middle of the tool.  With a custom build you could have just the tools you want, but it will cost you much more.

Vic can't make every conceivable version of SAK ... guess that's good why there's folks who can put together a custom one for you  :P

Too bad they don't have a build to order service... I'd be willing to pay extra for something like that, but then again, I guess that's what modders are for.

The closest thing that I've seen to a 'perfect' SAK for me is the Work Champ.  Gonna pick one up as soon as I can afford it.
