Sent off my Crunch

The Crunch I got was a used one and had no sheath, so I contected Eric at On Scene Tactical, who agreed to make me one. Breathless with anticipation I asked him to to let me know what kind of design he had in mind for it and he sent me a pic of a really cool sheath he made for a Kershaw tool and Mini Mag light. Needless to say, I am pretty excited to see what he comes up with for the Crunch!

I don;t think I am getting the Mag loop on mine... I dunno what he's going to do but I can't wait! I have a few sheaths for SAKs from Eric and it is all seriously top line stuff.

How do you suppose they press and form the material into the exact shape of the knife, and get it to stay that way?

As I understand it, kydex is malleable at a low teperature and either a heat gun or oven is enough to soften it to the point where it becomes very flexible. From there you wrap it around a knife (or whatever you want to use it on) and put it in a press with foam pads on either side (or on one side if you want a flat side, close the press and wait a minute. Then pull it out, rivet the edges and away you go.

I'll see if I can get Eric to come in here and point out everything wrong with what I just said...

Hey Guys...

Def..
You've pretty much got it pegged down...

Basically the material, Kydex or Concealex is heated to a certain temp..
I'm not 100% positive at what temp it is,, as I Only use a heatgun,,and everything I do is by feel, rather than temp or time..

When using a Gun as opposed to an over,, you are constantly feeling the material. Experience tells you when it's ready to press..

The tool, knife or what have you is put in the press, the material is folded over it,,and the tool is pressed...

There are many ways of doing this..
The tool sheath in the above photo was pressed by using the top half of the mould, the back being flat...

Once the sheath is" Roughed In", it is then laid out, holes drilled, ground ,sanded ,cleaned, and eyelets set..

After the eyelets are set,, it is then fitted, cleaned up, and fitted with a belt loop, clip or what have you...

All objects that are pressed have their own characteristics that hold it in the sheath..If the object has little to no hold,, then something else is done,, or hold is created manually for it...
For the most part,, most everything has it's own hold..

Now here's a silly question for you- what's the difference between Kydex and Concealex? I always thought that Concealex was just a brand name or something.

Hey Defender...

No problem at all..
You pretty much had it already...

The difference is much like Coke and Pepsi...
Both colas,, just different recipe...

They both have their qualities,, I prefer to use Concealex..

As for the name.. To further confuse you,, Concealex is actually Boltron..
Concealex is what Blade-tech calls it...
I continue to call it concealex as to not further confuse the general public..

Although not on it's way just yet,, it will be early next week...

Don't know if you've tried my Micro rigs yet for the Squirt/Micra,, but you'll be playing with themn for awhile...

I thing I should explain before I forget is how to get them out...

I've had a few people Freak out because the Micro rig has such a grip on the tool,, it Can't be pulled straight out..
You must Snap it out,, much like breaking a pencil between your fingers..

If you need pictures I can send them for you...

Yaa they really do hold onto it..

I've actually had to replace a couple,, because they didn't know how to get them out,, and ended up destroying them..
One used a Blowtorch,, another used a screwdriver,,and yet another dropped the entire thing into hot water..

Ouch... I did that with a small kydex rig that was supposed to fit a small pocketknife. I gave the knife away as it was a cheap POS (was a throw in with a trade I made) but kept the kydex in hopes of re-shaping it for my Micra. I never had that much success with it though.

I have no doubt I will like them- that's why I go to you in the first place! As you know I have seen some kydex rigs from some other guys (not mentioning names) and, well, I don;t think I could actually say the things I think about them in polite company!

Kydex seems to be one of those mediums that looks like it's easy to work, but not easy to work well...
