The New (to me) Tools Have Arrived (pic heavy)
on: July 01, 2011, 03:31:54 AM
Over in the What do we have on the way? thread I posted that I was expecting a lot that I bought, and now that it has arrived I wanted to share the un-boxing (not without some encouragement from Allan as well  :)). While I am in no way disappointed with the lot, the word of the day is definitely "filth". So you'll be seeing the tools as they came out of the box, in all their nasty glory. When I get them cleaned and oiled, I'll re-post some pictures.

The whole lot came in a zip-lock bag, with each tool individually bagged inside:

First we have the three Squirts, two S4's and a P4. Out of all of them, the only one that shows any sign of use of the fold out tools is Phillips driver in the S4 on the left. All the rest seemed untouched, covered with grime, but unused. In fact the only sign of use on the P4 is a couple of marks on the pliers. The scissors on the left S4 show moderate wear, and the right one slight wear. Underneath the tweezers holder on the left one there is what appears to be a spot of rust, but upon close examination I believe it to be a bit of dried soft drink, cleaning will tell. Also, if you look at the all three of them they look like they spent their life next to a set of keys in a pocket or a purse:

Second is the Crunch, probably the cleanest of the LM's in the lot, but still has some sort of green/yellow gunk in the teeth of the pliers. The only one of the fold out tools, that shows any use, is the fine side of the file:

Next we have the LM bit adapter, dirty case on the outside, but inside seems to be untouched. It's styled to fit the Sideclip (Not sure what else it fits. I wonder, has anyone ever made an adapter to tool reference chart?):

Fourth is the set of three different Gerber's. Two needle nose, one with scissors and a combination blade, the other with plain and serrated edge blades. With them is a blunt nose that has the combination blade, the jig saw blade holder, and scissors. All three plier heads show some signs of use, but once again hardly anything on the inside tools:

Next for your enjoyment is the classic Sideclip. Really nice condition, it's been used though, the pliers aren't as tight as new, the screws could use some adjusting, and there is some sort of discoloration on the tip of the blade. At first I thought perhaps it was from heat, but it seems to rub off. it may be some sort of pitch. I'll have to see how it cleans up:

Finally, last but not least, is the often sought after Pulse. Disgustingly dirty, but other than that I can't see much wrong with it. Like the Sideclip, it has been used, and the pliers aren't tight, but it sure is a pretty little thing (even in it's unwashed condition). You'll notice too that it is the fisherman version with the hook grove in the file:

The good news is that I'm not keeping all of them, so look for a an upcoming post in the Trade Forums

Nice.

The adapter fits the PST, PSTII, Mini, Sideclip, Supertool, and Flair, maybe the ST200. I sold mine before I got to later Leathermen.

Nice.

The adapter fits the ... Supertool, and Flair, maybe the ST200. ...

It has a larger tab, and is pointing the wrong way for the Supertool. As well, the Flair, and the PST don't have a provision for a tab

May I suggest what works for me. Get yourself the cheapest ultrasonic cleaner. Whenever I have something that needs a good cleaning, I run it through on a few cycles using only water in the tank. Then I get a small brush and scrub away. dry/buff/polish with a silver cleaning rag and oil it to finish it off.

Nice haul!  :D

Great haul dude.  Both my sideclip and pulse pliers are loose as well, maybe it's just how they get.  But even as users mine sure are pretty, so I have faith yours will clean up well and give you some of the best trade fodder around!

Congrats on a great haul buddy..   :o  :multi:
Part of the fun (for me at least) is taking the time to give them a good overhaul/TLC,
so I'll look forward to see the "after" pics too..  :tu: :tu:

Well, they all made one trip through the dishwasher, with some good results.

The Gerber's came out looking really good, they weren't really as bad as the rest to start with, just have to oil up the pivots and they should be ready for pics. They are a really nice set, almost makes me think about collecting Gerber's, but still I think they will be more loved by a Gerber collector. So they'll be going up for trade.

The Squirts will have to go through the wash again, they are markedly better, but still carry years of build up. Chako has me intrigued though, I will looking at ultrasonic cleaners when we stop at Walmart tonight. I only wish the finish on them was better, they don't seem very trade worthy. But I will be listing them anyway, since I already have a complement of squirts. We'll see how they do.

The washing of the Crunch released the rust that was inside the pliers pivot, so right now they are soaking in Rem Oil. The oil seemed to flush any remaining rust away right after washing, but I want to make sure that it gets worked into the pivot really well. I was fully planning on keeping this, but even in its great condition, I keep thinking that its not my “goto” tool, so having a backup seems unnecessary (especially since there are Core's yet to be had :) ). Most likely heading to trade.

The Sideclilp came out clean, except for the tip of the blade, but the discoloration is lighter, I’m going to try some solvent, I think that will do the trick. There are a few spots of rust on a driver, and a little bit inside the handle. This will be taken care of this weekend. The Sideclip is one that I had always planed to trade.

The Pulse came out beautiful and shinny, oiled up really well. When I first saw this lot, I new I’d be trading or selling this one, just because there are so many people that have an affinity for them. :D As a matter of fact, as soon as I posted that this lot was on the way to me, I got a couple of PM’s from guys that were interested in it then.

You know, I just realized that if I don’t keep the Crunch, that will be the whole lot gone...  :ahhh

Well, the Pulse is off to England already, but I snapped a pic before it left. I didn't get a chance to polish it, just cleaned and oiled. This a picture of it laying on my oil cloth:

Well the Gerber's are gone, and no sooner did I get done with the Sideclip, and the Crunch and they were gone too.

Now I'll see what I can do with the Squirts.

Here is a picture of the finished Sideclip and Crunch, they sure did turn out pretty :D:

Well, I'm afraid the S4's are a hopeless cause. I tried putting an edge on the scissors, but the pivots on both of them are so worn, that they are more of a paper folder than a cutter. :(

The P4 shows some excellent progress though, the second time through the wash did the trick, and now it's clean as a whistle. And the tools seem to be taking a polish real well.

I'm thinking of maybe removing the rest of finish off of the scales, to try and make them look more presentable. Has anyone ever tried this on a Squirt before?

I've seen folks do it to Juices, but cannot recall a polished Squirt. Seems like it would work the same though. :)
