Victorinox 58mm knife list. (Picture Heavy).

I hope the rest of the Victorinox are easier to ID. Please feel free to correct any naming errors. Anyhow, here are my Victorinox 58mm knives found in the drawer. I have quite a lot more but are special boxed collector items. Thus, these are the naked knives sort of speak. I was a bit surprised that I have a few duplicates. For a while, I was buying a few Classic lots and keeping the nicer ones.

Here goes another painful cataloguing.

Nice, my finger got tired just from scrolling down that list  :D
Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day,
listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time

If there's no official name I vote "quilt" for pattern description.

You're starting to get a nice collection of the little ones :tu:

That's impressive! But there's still a lot of them you don't have (yet) ;)

I'm very interested in the boxed items by the way :pok:

 :o Nice!

I really like the one called "Space."  I haven't seen that before.  I'm assuming the scales are sterling?

That is correct gustophersmob.

Reinier, I never set out to collect them all. That would be nigh impossible. Come to think of it, the 58mm size never truly floated my boat. It comes as a shock that I have so many to be truthful.
As for the boxed items...I think those will be the last I dig into. I have some truly special stuff in those...even though I don't know all of what I have. Which I guess is the reason why I am going through this lengthy process in the first place. Mind you, I do like sharing photos of my collection, and thus figured I should make the process longer by taking photographs of it all and posting it on here.

I have always said that a collection should be shared and not hoarded...that is my own personal philosophy, and do hope it doesn't come off as a form of braggart activity.

I understand. It's also the reason why I've stopped collecting 58mm's by the way. Those dogbone models are still on my wanted list though :)

Thanks for sharing all these fantastic photos Chako, I really appreciate that you take your time to share your collection!  :tu: I really like the 58mm range of vics because they are small and not threatening to non-sak people, but still usable, also there is a good range of useful tools to select from.

But I have one question: have you (or anyone else) noted that older 58s have a different blade profile than the newer ones? It is noticeable from your photos, the older blades have the nail nick closer to the rivet and also more belly and are somewhat thicker.

I prefer the older blade shape and actually have a older classic without hinge for key ring (bijou) but it has old style spring for scissors and a different nailfile: one sided and "ribbed" file surface, what is interesting is that the file is very thin and the blade is thicker than usual. Is this a common style for older knives? The scales are smooth alox, black with advertising. Is this perhaps what SAKWiki call a 58mm executive?

I will try to post photos in this tread later.

IMHO I would prefer that the modern classic SD had the older style blade or, even better, the blade type I described above.

Sorry. Your response fell through the cracks.

As for your question, SAKWiki states that the 58mm Executive came only in red. Now, SAKWiki is not infallible, thus, I do not know. There are other members who are far more knowledgeable then I am on this matter. Maybe one of them will respond with an answer.

Does anyone know how much silver is in the scales of the sterling 58mms?

A local knife guy has a few for sale for around $60 a piece.  I'm assuming that is higher than the silver is worth.  I wonder if it is a good price?

That is a cracking good price. Most silver SAKs retail online in the 80 to 100 range.

I love that Shamrock Classick. I'm not Irish but my favorite team, Panathinaikos uses an Irish color scheme (the team's founder in 1908 studied in Ireland and learned soccer there).

Great looking collection!  :tu:

A couple of minor comments:

-There are at least four shades of pink. Yours might be the Hot Pink.

www.sakwiki.com/show_image.php?id=165

- Barleycorn. My example and references show a square, rather sharp pattern. Not sure if the diamond pattern is a variation or has a different name

- Second Neil on the 'Quilt'. You might want to double-check yours; my Classic is marked 'Sterling'.

You might check Wayne's (Stressmaster's) web site for more Classics:

An old thread, but a good one. I've always loved the little 58mm's and thought they were the unsung hero's of the SAK line. I'm sure they must be the most popular in sales, as Blade magazine had a classic on the cover a few years ago, and called it the most confiscated knife in America. I go to a gun show held locally, and there's a lady who sells TSA confiscated knives. About 3/4 of them are 58mm SAK's with a smattering of other knives tossed in. I always pick up a few spare classic's and ramblers.

I thought it odd that it was an old post. Yeah, I'd have like to see more of his collection. Maybe he'll come back and show us more. Like I said, I just love those 58's.

An belated add-on to the belated add-on.   :D

The Arrows and Intertrack were originally sold in Japan as Yagasuri and Shima. They were part of a set of four Classics with designs based on traditional Japanese clan patterns.

I've often wondered how massive a collection it would be if one were to collect all of the 58mm variants. Judging from this thread and the others I've seen, it would be very massive indeed.

Some years back I was talking with a major SAK dealer in the mid-Atlantic region. He said he had several customers who specialized in collecting Classics (including advertising versions), and whose collections numbered in the 3,000 to 5,000 range. Given that many (most?) European and Asian Classics never make it to the U.S., a definitive Classic collection would probably run into the tens of thousands.

I like this topic. That Nokia one is special, the tip of the cap lifter I think is made to reset phones or something? Anyone???

Later today I'll post a pic or two of all the translucent 58mm. They look really nice all together.

And one of my Midnite Manager just cause I feel it's missing from this thread.
