Started this a while ago after reading Mikes post on 4inch knives

Got put to one side for sometime...
Lost a few pictures, it was going to have a straight blade with a scandi grind but it turned slightly curved with a convex edge  ::)

I should probably leave it alone there

In a certain light you can almost see some letters  ;)

What I did last round was quench in oil, immediately out and dip into water and back into the oil........and I'm sticking to that till further notice.  :salute:

I usually use water but have used oil when grinding misc. things and try never to get it to hot by cooling often  but I haven't ever made some of the things that you two have made :salute: :like:

Files are normally made of W2.... the W stands for water quench (O1 is oil quench, A2 is air quench). Oil quenching W2 will achieve a lower than optimal hardness, but minimise potential for cracking.

What kind of oil?
I started with Canola, then recently got advice to use automotive oil thinned with....thinners  :D
I had about a liter of 10W40 meant for my previous car, thinned that down and eventually mixed it with the Canola oil.

The reason why I went for oil-water-oil is recently often as not the blades didn't harden.
I isolated two problems, first my magnet used for testing for critical went all middle-aged and stopped being.......attractive   Got too hot I think.
Secondly my oil just got too hot quenching multiple blades......I think.

Also want to mention my first file knife, also the first time I heat treated a blade.......it was short & chunky, same as yours, and after 3 or 4 unsuccessful oil quenches I went to water and that worked.

Unfortunately I'm not being very scientific, the last 3 blades I heat treated have been the best so far, first for the oil-water-oil method, AND the first to go directly into the oven for tempering after the heat treat.

I was using used motor oil but it made my coffee taste funny, so I got some cheap veg oil

:o Who are you calling short and chunky???

I think mine is OK, I will see how it holds up

The G/F asks me to look at a knife for her,
It once belonged to her Grandfather he would carry it when they went for picnics in the mountains when she was a little girl,
she also says 'please don't harm it** or the sheath, replaced by her Grandfather after loosing the original'

**(I don't know why she should say this to me)

Missing the butt cap

So I decide to replace the missing butt cap with one made from a silver locket I have in my projects box
I make a mould from some clay

That works OK

Now all I need is a sheath
Leather bag I bought a few weeks ago...

Turns out the leather is more PVC  than cow

And the silver is a little more 'leady than I would like'  ::)
Oh well too late now

Nice job, may I ask how you got the "leather" to hold its shape, I have worked with leathers that you just wet and then you can shape them but that doesn't work for all leathers, right?

I don't think what I did will be permanent like leather should be, it feels very soft

My 'leather' seems to be a thin layer of suede backed with vinyl

As you said I soaked mine in warm water for half an hour then sandwiched it between two pieces of sleeping mat and clamped it together between two boards to dry for a couple of days
