One more in the MUT owners club. Love it. Own several SAKs, Gerbers and a few smaller Leatherman MTs, but I consider the MUT my EDC.

Nice work on that DLCed pocket clip, Teletin.   :tu:

Here's few photos of my "Black Ninja MUT"...plastic parts dyed in black Rit fabric dye, clip darkened by a simple Ti oxidation method  :)

I don't plan to touch the bronze scraper as I like the finish and contrasting effect with the rest of the tool.

I've included few comparison photos with the retail (unadultered) MUT version.

cheers,
babola

Thanks guys, after I dyed that MUT I hardly ever reached again for the other 'normal' one (which I received by mistake).

Babola or others that have dyed the plastic - any tips? I've got the dye and my brand new MUT ready to go. Get the water boiling, throw in the dye and plastic for 15 minutes over a low flame, sit the plastic on a towel to cool? Or is there a better way? Any trick to removing the plastic pieces?

Having gotten to it yet. Hoping to dye the plastic and grind the punch in to a small screw driver next week. Will definitely post the victory shots if it all works out.

I might dye mine black also if it works out good for you.

I already ground my punch into a little scratch awl.

It's easy, really. I died quite a few G-shocks in the past so it became a routine for me.

I use RIT fabric dye, dissolve a teaspoon of it in a pot of 1/2" boiling water I removed previously from the flame. Dip in the parts and wait for some 10-15 mins. Done.

Take the bits out from the liquid, and wash them on a tap.

To remove those 4 plastic bits just use your head and logic and go slowly. The side plastic parts (larger ones) are held by two screws on a side but are easy to figure out. If you get stuck let me know - enjoy the modding!  :tu:

I went a little further on my MUT and decided to dip the pocket clip in OXY wash to get darker shade of gray and treated the bronze scraper/awl with Sulphur for aged bronze look.

I have few other mods in mind but they will have to wait for now  8)

Love my 'Black Ninja' MUT!

Next time I'm making up a pot of dye my mut plastic is taking a dip.

I may just dunk my whole tool instead of taking it apart.

Oxy wash?

Oxyclean or Napisan...tripple dunk...1st for 5mins then check, 2nd for 10 mins then check, 3rd for 20 mins. Make sure you start with the new solution every time in between, the effective oxidation is really only for first few minutes while the powder dissolves and froths up. It starts wearing off from then on.

Also, use boiled water for best results.

Let us know how it goes...cheers.

Another owner here,  while I don't consider it an EDC tool for me it is a great shooting kit tool for me,  has a lot of tools that can handle field breakdowns on my guns and setting up my targets.

Now all I need is an AR-15/AR-10 to go with it :)

My MUT with plastic dyed, Swisscard scissors and tweezers, and punch ground to a small flat head screwdriver. (All great ideas from other forum members - thanks guys!)

Was able to loosen 4 of 5 test screws with the small flathead open to 90 degrees and my fingers gripping it so that the punch doesn't unscrew from the MUT (the 5th screw was very tight). Not perfect, but my main use for it will be to open battery compartments on toys so hopefully it's adequate.

If anyone has any ideas on how I could buy a steel version of the awl/scrapper, I'd love to hear them.
