A New Project Arrived in the Mail Today
on: July 14, 2011, 01:44:02 AM
It's a terrible shame what some people do to their tools. Even though I did get it for a good price, I can't help but think that it does not quite match the seller's description of: "Used in great condition:think:

Anyway, it will be fun bringing it back to its former glory.

More pics to come  :D

Abuse, when describing a multit-tool is a very subjective term.  Personally, I can justify horrible abuse of a multi if you need a job done and don't have the correct tool for the job handy.  That's why we buy them, so we can use them.

Neglect on the other hand is just unforgivable to me.  That tool was left to rust when the smallest effort could have kept it in good shape.

Have fun with that one.  I too enjoy restoring a multi.

OUCH! That's messy. I've got every confidence though Paul and look forward to seeing it back looking shiny and fresh again  :D

Thanks for the encouragement.  :tu:

Well she came out of the wash a sight better than when she went in. A good rub down with a polishing cloth cleaned up about 70% of the rust. The marks on the plain edge cleaned up pretty good with some polishing compound, still stained a little, but the rest will be tackled after a good Rem Oil treatment. I want to get her soaked good to see how much of that oxidation I can undo. Nevertheless the outlook is favorable, there doesn't seem to be any pitting anywhere.

The serrated blade has a few rough spots on the first inch or so of it, nothing major, they should clean up quickly after I get the rest of the rust off of it.

The plain edge had a few rough spots, and the very tip of the blade was gone. I worked for a few minutes with the diamond and ceramic rods, and brought the tip back about 50%. It does have the infamous Leatherman uneven bevel grind though, so I just may give it a quick re-profile with the coarse stone. I don't know, I'll decide that after oiling.

The pliers, while overall having a good finish, definitely show signs of hard use. It's strange however, the outside edges of the fine toothed portion have a roughness to them, as though someone was working a harder metal than the plier head has. But the fine teeth themselves are pristine, other than some rust. Near as I can tell, it looks like they were used to maybe hammer some finishing nails or brads. A little file work should clean it up nicely I think.

I also found a small sliver of electrical tape stuck down in next to one of the locking levers. So even if she had a rough life, it does look like she had a useful one :salute:

Wow poor Core, glad to hear its cleaning up nicely and your bringing it back to life. I received a Charge Ti the other day and compared to your Core it was in great condition, still a few rust spots and dirt but nothing a bit of elbow grease couldn't sort out.
Glad this Core found a new home and your bringing it back to life.

It's at home soaking in a coat of oil, I'll be working on it tonight when I get home. I wanted to give the file a good scrub before I oiled it, but I couldn't seem to find my file brush. I think my son may have run off with it, I'll find out tonight.

To be honest, I was more excited about the challenge of restoring it, than I was sad about the inaccurate description of the true state of the tool.

But in your case, that was just outright wrong when the seller lied like that. You did a great job of bringing it back to life though.  :tu:

My Juice SC4 was purchased from Ebay and was also listed as "Great Condition".  When it arrived I was surprised to find what appeared to be dried blood on some of the tools and in the crevices of  the tool.

Maybe I should be glad this one can't talk.

It cleaned up well and has been with me daily for the last 4 years.

Dried blood? Could of been a murder weapon? Seriously though its a shame that some sellers lie just to make a quick sale. If I were to sell any of my tools, I would make sure they are spotless first. I would especially make sure I cleaned all the blood of it so CSI couldn't get me :-)

I don't know where my file brush is, I'm beginning to think that I imagined having one  :-\
Anyway, I picked up a cheap little brass brush from the welding section of the store on my way home, and it did a great job of getting the file clean. After that I worked more oil into the pliers pivot. I then gave the tool a good rubdown with my oil cloth, concentrating on the corrosion, and then it was off to the sink.

At the sink the Core got a good scrubbing in some detergent water, using a Scotch-Brite, and copper wool. That seemed to take care of the last of the major rust, the metal still showed slight staining, but I should be able to clear most of that up with polishing compound.

Now she's back in the dishwasher, getting any remaining residue, and suspended rust out of the nooks and crannies. After a thorough drying it will be time for some detailed Q-tip work.

This evening I got the Q-tips out and took care of the rust in the tight areas. Then it was back to the sink for a final washing, to clean out all rust that I loosened.

After drying I put an edge (and a tip) back on the plain blade. I didn't work the serrated edge tonight, that takes a lot more careful attention, and it has been a long tiring week, just not up to it on a Friday. Maybe tomorrow.

Now with some working oil in the pivots, it's polishing time. Final pics should be up tomorrow  :D

The only things I used, that aren't listed in my steps in this thread, would be a sharp knife point to work Rem Oil and polishing compound into tiny areas (I do need to pick up a brass pick set for home...), and for the polishing I use Maas
