Titanium SAK progress...
on: July 18, 2011, 08:48:06 AM
I decided to start a new thread because everybody likes mod progress pictures. :tool:

This is an aluminum block with an angle cut on one end that matches the angle of the screwdriver/corkscrew slot in the back scale. In a regular SAK the screwdriver rests on the outside liner so I needed to make sure this area was just right. I wrap emery paper around this block to clean this back notch up a little at a time until the driver lays flat.

Open with everything brought to the proper dimensions...

...and closed.

All together now. Actually there are many more parts to go. This one will be a Delux Tinker with an inlaid yellow shield that I will dub "The Submariner" when it's finished.

Sorry for the pic problem. I shuffled some photoshop stuff around and broke the links. Can I get a mod to delete the first two posts please?

Done. :salute:

No, I cut these with my jewelers saw. It moves pretty fast in this thin material. My plan was to sell the first several knives I finished to fund a large run of waterjet spacers to save time but I'm afraid that the quote Dave gave me was unrealistic given what others charge and then he went MIA. Has he gotten back to you yet?

Bushido,

No he hasn't. All I have left to do is cut the hammer itself.

Great work so far!

I did something similar. Not sure it fits here or in it's own thread... It isn't perfect, but I like it. The only way to your perfect SAK is to make your own.

The Titanium is stunning tho!!

Beautiful! How about a little background? Is that polished aluminum? Stainless? Iridium?

I used 3mm Stainless steel plate and shaped it with bench grinder and filed smooth. Used 180 grit paper and worked down to 1000 grit before buffing. I had to use 2.5mm pins all round since I don't have 2.25mm drill for the centre pins. This meant drilling out the relevant spacers, hook and a few springs. Broke the drill bit 3 times.... I think. Well worth the effort tho. The scales holes are slightly countersunk to allow for the pins riveting to hold all together. The only unfortunate thing is that the outer aluminium spacers had to be inserted in order to accommodate the difference in thickness of main blade and corkscrew. Otherwise main blade is loose and the knife scales wont be parallel. Sorry there isn't progress pics but I plan to do another one as soon as I work out what I want.

With the scales and liners polished up I turn my attention to enlarging and honing the tool pivot holes to .127" and then mirror polishing them with some green buffing compound on half a cotton swab in a Dremel tool. Even though the pins are a harder titanium alloy I don't want to give them a surface to gall onto.It is tedious to open up all these holes with a diamond reamer but I'm stuck on using 1/8" pins.  Now I have to make a bunch of .005" phosphor bronze washers to keep the tools from riding directly on the liners.

Autoclave safe Titanium toothpick and tweezers for my little orange G10 Classic. They are both longer and wider than the usual SAK implements. The tweezers have passed the girlfriend eyebrow pluck test with flying colors. She says that a girl has to search high and low to find a tweezer that works this well. I told her that tonight she gets steak and corn on the cob for phase 2 of the testing.

Your work is very impressive. Congrats mate!
However the Titanium toothpick may hurt the poor girl's teeth.

Passing the eyebrow test is praise indeed :tu:

She's right, the number of cosmetic tweezers that just don't work on fine hair is quite ridiculous ::)  They can often be saved with a bit of sandpaper but you shouldn't have to.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

They were a bitch to make. I'm going to have them and the toothpicks EDMed from now on from one piece and to the dimensions of the originals so they will fit cellidor scales if someone just wants them for a regular SAK. Then all I have to do is make jigs to sand the slant on the head and bend them out.

Meh, they could be better but thanks.  :) They are 3 pieces, 5 if you count the 2 rivet pins. I cut them out of .030" sheet, epoxied them together, drilled 2 holes for the rivets, broke everything apart and finish sanded and tweaked the slight bends, riveted them together, sanded the rivets flush, shaped the grabby end aaaaaaand rounded the head. They should have been .020 sheet so they would fit in a standard cellidor slot depth but they sure do hold tight. You can sort of make out where the 2 rivets hold the 2 pieces of the toothpick together.
