Help with tipe of metal
on: July 21, 2011, 04:31:23 PM
I got these 5 "blanks" recently with some SAK's I bought at a scrapyard they were all in a box together, but I've got no idea what kind of metal they are or if they'll make a good knife, hopefully someone can give some advice.

Some info on the blades:27.5cm long - 3mm thick and the blade is 27mm wide, they are not magnetic but they are heavy and very hard to grind on a bench grinder, I used the top one to experiment on,I'm sure (almost)   it's some kind of stainless but it not being magnetic bothers me.

I gave it a solid(all my force) smash on the edge of my steel bench and this was the result

It polishes up to a mirror finish

any thoughts?

Rest is not idleness,
and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day,
listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky,
is by no means a waste of time

It's possible it's a-286 or 316 stainless. Those are non magnetic stainless steels. The only real way to tell is to have a lab analyze it.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Thanks for that I'll try and sharpen one and see how it cuts, although if its any of those 2 it won't be good as knives according to a quick google search, maybe I'll make a  spear point of sort.
