Is my “perfect SAK” doable??
on: January 27, 2019, 11:15:31 AM
Still thinking about my “perfect” SAK...

While I absolutely love my alox models, especially my Wenger SI, I think I have figured up what my real life perfect SAK would be.

I’m thinking Explorer Plus, but trade the small blade for the nail file from the new Cadet and grind the tip into a smaller flat head for smaller screws.

Then remove the can opener and stick an inline 93mm awl in there, if that can be done!

The magnifying glass?? Well, I guess leave it unless a wrench would fit.

There. That seems to have everything I could want. Oh, add a deep carry pocket clip while we’re at it!!

What do you guys n gals think?  Is it possible??

Probably need to test it out... Although I’ve never tried it, 84mm tools would sit low on 91mm frame and thus make it hard to reach...

What I’ve already done is replacing small blade with awl, no problems there...

Hopefully someone more experienced can chime in...

For the universal wrench, should work as long as the inline phillips is the newer shorter one...

I could live with the regular 91mm nail file if need be. Just that the new pattern on the Cadet looks nice to me!!

And maybe reprofile the file shape similar to the small file?

Well from some research, it seems none of the 91mm SAKs have the nail file. Is that correct??

I wonder how hard it would be to do the cross cut pattern into the existing small blade??

Sorry, I meant the 91mm metal file... but probably not a good idea if your using it for nails... The older less aggressive ones? I have yet to hold a new 84mm nail file...

All being said, it would probably be easier to convert my Wenger Champ into what I want. Just remove the long file and saw layers. Oh and the magnifying layer.   The fish scaler would have to go as well.

That would leave:

Nail file/main blade
Wrench/inline Phillips head
Scissors
Cap lifter/can opener

Then the question on if the 93mm awl would fit in there with the cap lifter??

Updated... nope, doesn’t look like the awl would fit in with the cap lifter...

I’d hate to tear this Champ apart though...

I don't know if it's possible, but I think that sounds like an amazing SAK!  :like: :gimme:

Not quite.  91mm SAKs are available with two types of files:

1)  Some (but not all) 91mm hooks have a nail file on the back of them.  This nail file is a little on the small side, obviously, but works fine.  Example:  Compact

2)  The metal saw/file is a bit aggressive, but works fine on fingernails as well.  Example:  Mountaineer

Somebody might have build something close lately sans inline awl:

Compact nail file in the back:

I think the 84mm nail file would sit low. But it might be more accessible, if you flip it to the other side like I did with the combo tool next to the scissor blade side.  I don't stock alox parts or I might've given it a go.

My ideal SAK....easy:

*Spirit X with pivot screws instead of rivets
*one handed opening main blade
*Modified 4 in one tool to be a hybrid serrated blade with chisel and box cutter. Did this mod today.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtPIOE1haCI/?utm_source=ig_web_options_share_sheet

*Modified can opener turned into a spoon gouge. (like Zachary Fowler did)
*Standard scissor from 91mm SAK. Really not a fan of the Spirit X scissors.

Start with the Explorer plus.
Replace the small blade with the Pioneer awl.
Replace the magnifier with the Wenger universal wrench.
Replace the can opener with the 84mm/Wenger nail file (you'll need to bend it a little, maybe drill out the pivot...).
Fit a clip to one of the scales with epoxy + screws, then epoxy the scale to the knife.

I forgot about the wenger file could be a good solution.  This might be the option you want to go with.

Imagine a perfect world.........

Victornox giving you the opportunity to design your own tool.

A simple list of compatible tools, possibly with a interactive spreadsheet or website.

Choose the tools you want or even suggest a design/ modification of tooling.

Pay your cash and wait until you get it.

It would cost though, but for some, it would be worth it.
tools is what defines us as humans

That would leave:

Nail file/main blade
Wrench/inline Phillips head
Scissors
Cap lifter/can opener

Look for a Wenger Cyclist or Mustang. It has exactly that.
