Should Spyderco be worried?
on: May 28, 2019, 08:53:20 PM
Hey all, I bought this buck 722 a while ago, and wound up not carrying it much until recently. Upon carrying it, I have been very surprised at how robust and sharp it is. This knife weighs almost nothing, is ambidextrous opening, has an adjustable pocket clip, and holds a great edge. Earlier today I had to cut through a piece of 1/2" rope and it sliced through it in two swipes! And on top of all that, it costs about half of what a Spyderco runs on average. Still a big Spyderco fan, but they may have some competition in buck. What are you guys thoughts?

That´s the one they call Spitfire, right? I had my hands on it a few years ago and I really liked it.
I remember there was a smaller version that was somewhat less well constructed.

I carried that knife and was impressed!  I don't think Spyderco is going to worry, as they are almost a cultural icon themselves.  Just the same, that's a great knife!

Nothing against Buck, one of the Packlites was my first step into these murky waters and their prices allowed me to get some fun stuff  8)

:iagree:   Nothing saying Buck is any less a cutlery manufacturer, and it has a few well known models that will always go down as iconic in the cutlery history.  But I suspect it is going to take a lot more to make Spyderco to really worry.

Not sure I'd consider Buck and Spyderco direct competitors, as it seems to be they fill slightly different niches.  In my experience, any USA-made Buck will be a decent knife.

Spyderco doesn't need to worry, because Spyderco fans aren't worried. :ahhh

I have recently bought a few of Buck's USA knives and was over-the-moon impressed. The Bantam 285 is one of the best budget US knives made. I find them for $10-$20 locally and Buck even stamped Buck USA on the blade itself, and not just the tang. Being a lockback, they still made the action fluid and determined. They polished the blade as well.

I also bought the Inertia assisted knife and was impressed. They even designed a special double locking mechanisn for the blade. Kershaw USA may need to be on the lookout. I got my Inertia for $39 locally.

I got one of the Spitfires in S35VN for 35 dollars and it is a super knife.
It has the gold aluminum scales and the fit and finish are spot on.

Buck has been doing some good stuff lately.

I have had the smaller Spitfire (orange scales) from Cabalas for less than $25.

I liked the blade, but my larger hands had trouble gripping the scales, to smooth, and deploying one handed.

My blade was a PE, yet can see the combo blade being a good option.

Like GLBM, I have a few Bantams in two sizes and different handle patterns.  A great bargain, but prices are not as reasonable as when I bought.  I have a few on hold in my Amazon cart, pries are about $2 higher than last spring or summer.

I will take a Buck over a Spyderco anyday. I only own one Sypderco, the Tenacious, and I spent about 70-80 dollars on it a few years back. It is a nice knife, but now I realize I spent way too much on it. Walmart now sells it for about $40.00. I can buy an American made Buck for a really good price. The USA Spyderco's are expensive. I also do not like the Syderco's with the plastic like scales. I have handled a few of them and they felt really cheap.

Spyderco is losing zero sleep concerning what Buck is releasing.
