Arborman - Green Thumb mod of a Wave.
on: July 30, 2011, 08:31:16 AM
Yup, it was inevitable.

I've ALWAYS wanted a shear based MT. The LM Hybrid is too big.

I found an inexpensive set of folding shears online and I am going to get a couple to mod, hopefully into a LM Wave.

We'll see how this one works out, it maybe not be as fruitful as my other MPC Customs, but as it stands, there are 2 unaltered Waves in my stables itching to come out and play.

This is all contingent on IF the shears fit into the damn thing.

I have doubts, but that's never stopped me before. Worst case, I reshape the outside profile to accommodate the slimmer Wave internals.

Parts have been ordered.

I also ordered a couple of SAK knock offs to transplant the scissors into the Arborman for fine clipping work.

Again, this is all contingent that the clipper heads fit into the Wave.

Holy crap. These shears are huge.

I am going to have to do some serious grinding to make this work. Good news is that the original spring should fit inside. The inside tools may not be able to stay, at least the ones in the middle.

Here are some comparison pics for size.

Maybe the Surge is a better match?

So maybe I have to find a Donor Surge?

I took apart the shear and the shear head is ALMOST direct drop in. There will be a small gap hen close k think. I maybe able to cut a coil of the spring and reduce the gap a bit.

I think I an going to keep my eyes open for a Surge so I can keep my own Surge unharmed.

Anyone have a cheap Surge to trade for a TTi??

My suspicions were right. I just took out the spring and it should fit like a glove. The holes match up perfectly, they need a little boring to the right diameter. I'll clip the spring and bobs your uncle

The shears take up 2 took thickness (insides) so I think I will keep the flat bit driver and move the awl to the other side. The rest isn't really useful unless I am drinking beer, fixing my glasses and trying to repair two kinds of screws while outside.

Here are some pics for scale. notice how Centered the holes are! Almost no modding. I hope.

The length is perfect too.

Two tool thicknesses. It's a tiny bit thicker, I'll figure out how it'll work later.

I am VERY temper to mod this Surge and get a new/used one later, the blades are scratched and I would have no worries about getting it dirty.

Yah, I am pretty sure I am going to hack up this Surge.
Not much hacking really, but you know what I mean.

The Surge's handles will not only fit the shears better, but they also will be better for applying pressure.

Used Surges just don't come up as often as used Waves :)

Reply #13 on: August 24, 2011, 01:11:22 AM
Huh, that wasn't as hard as I thought. No turned back now. I had to remove the plier tension spring to accommodate the shear head.

Made spacers for it to sit in the middle of the tool. The awl sits very nicely, I am going to see if I can swap out a flat bit driver from a wave (thinner and will fit).

I had to Crush the original spring for the head for it to close. Nothing like bashing some metal.

The spacers.

I'll have to make a spacer for the awl to sit flat against the chassis. The other side is bare right now, waiting for that flat driver.

The spring on the head pushes the tool apart 1mm. Not a bad thing.

The BEST part about this is that all you have to do is to close the tool together and the closing motion and squeeze engages the lock on the head.

This project is moving along quick. I am devising a locking mechanism to keep the hands in stiff.

More to come!

Yah, like i said. Not really as hard as I thought. Most of the time was spend making the spacers and partial assembly.

I'll finish it up tonite or tomorrow. I have a bunch of freelance design to do.

I think I am going to add an inside saw from a Blast. I modded one for a friend and she didn't need it. It should drop in, if not I'll grind it down in length. I'll take off the tool coupler (file/saw) and put in the weeded spade so it can be outside opening.

I am pretty happy with now this is going, far less crazy than the Mjolnirman.

I have a quick question for you Metropolicity. What can I fit in the unused space in the Kick? Also what are the basics for taking a kick apart? I am just assuming you know.  :D

I don't have a kick but I am assume you can fit any of the smaller tools, flat bit, scissors etc.

Those knurled screws are a pain to take off, the tool end has one stationary side and a screw that tightens. Lightly clamp it with a vice grip and you can unscrew it, the other side will stay put.

What were you thinking?

I was thinking either scissors, saw, file, or awl.

I'll see about putting the weeded on the inside, but if the saw fits well, I am going to do it.

Reply #24 on: August 24, 2011, 07:56:46 AM
done!

I added a few spring washers to have a constant tension on the shear head pivot points.

I kept the coupler, the awl and eveything else went to the wayside. (won't fit)

Load out.

I have my trademark floating photo but I have to edit it first.

Which scales?

The ones that came with the original cheap tool? They are very cheap plastic, nothing really worth saving. I may make some coloured ones to glue to the outside so its easier to find...maybe Lime Green? I haven't assigned a colour to this yet.
