Question: Faux rivets
on: April 07, 2013, 06:44:41 PM
Has anyone added faux rivets to new cellidor scales to give a new Vic knife some 1950s flair? If so, what did you use for the rivets and how are they attached?

I was thinking about using something like small stainless round top brads (if I can find something like that), drilling through the scale and epoxying them in. Not quite as nice as the original flush look but might add a vintage look.

A waste of time & effort IMO.

False rivets could look cool. If I did it though I would use brass, not stainless. Or I might just do real exposed rivets. Although correct me if I'm wrong, I think they would need to be solid plastic scales to do exposed rivets.

The main problem I can see with doing fakes it that they will be right on top of the real rivets and there is not much thickness left in the scales there.

To do real exposed rivets with existing scales (including the newer hollow ones) it would be best to fill the bushing holes on the back with an epoxy filler to give solid support to the rivet.

I admit that a cosmetic mod like this might be a waste of time, I just thought it would look cool.

Maybe Victorinox should produce a 'vintage' line with the rivets foil stamped into the scales like the cross and shield.

It could work, but you'd probably want to fill the scales with epoxy to make them solid as modern ones are hollow.  Then extend the actual rivets and peen.  It would look decent enough I think.

... adds yet ANOTHER thing to the TO DO list

Actually I did something like this when I put a bail on an old cellidor Elinox but just for the bail pivot rivet.
Perhaps I should revisit that one and do all the rivets... and make an old school round awl while I'm at it.
