Sending in a black oxide Surge for warranty work; the blade locks are not engaging and am concerned about tool safety.

Question is: If there was an option to have it replaced, should I keep the black oxide or ask for a regular steel version?

Since the edges are squared like the Wave, filing the black oxide edges leaves silver pin stripes and makes for an ugly tool.
Then too the black oxide is nice in that it keeps the Surge from getting too hot in the sun, not so cold, and is great for covert stealth work.


Should be getting it off in the mail this week. Been a bit hectic here and keep getting delayed in getting to the post office.  :ahhh

I think that a well-worn multitool (or knife or gun) looks great, because it shows that the tool has been around the block a time or two.  So I say keep the black oxide.

Yeah I agree with PowerNoodle. A well worn BO tool is awesome, gives the MT great character.

I voted for BO, but stainless looks great too and I would also like to add a stainless Surge to my arsenal someday.  Its nice to be in a position where  - no matter what you do - its a good outcome.

Some of them scratches though...
Here is my current Surge. Keep getting distracted to get to the post office in time. Looks like will be delayed till Monday, unless I can get to the post office tomorrow. Does US Snail Mail even work on weekends now? :shrug:

Doubt I can get Leatherman to laser engrave the handles again. This was done by special arrangement with friends - a one time only thing.

Don't know anyone else in or around Portland, other than a few Leatherman contacts. Those have told me that Leatherman doesn't have an engraving for warranty work, and no way to pay extra.
The way it worked last time is I had to send it to the Leatherman Store, with cash notes (for engraving and postage back).
But the handle sides are so badly scratched from filing the edges and usage.
