Swiss Messerschmiede Röthlisberger
on: August 05, 2011, 07:10:22 PM
Very interesting knives from Switzerland... somebody met with them already?
Looks like they used some Vic tools 93mm - pruner & elecrician blades, saw and give nice clip-point blade, sacking needle & awsome wood & horn handles with brass bolster & liners :tu:
The prices is really high...

He is a frendly man and he makes nice knives. I bought a knife from him last year in his little shop.
His father has made 1956 + 1957 soldiers model 51 for the Swiss Army.
These knives are pretty rare and they have a tangstamp similar to his new knives like the one on the picture.

Very Nice!!

Interesting knives and history; I could see these living in my collection next to my Vics, and that's not true for almost any others.

Picked up a lovely 56 soldier today with what I thought a very rare tang stamp I was looking forward to a few days of investigations but ..... got to love this site :)

I had never seen a non vic /  wenger  in the 51 model anyone know if there are more to look for ?

Wow! Congrats!  :tu: This is a very nice and rare find. Röthlisberger was the only company beside Elsener and Wenger who produced the Model 51 and he did it only 1956 and 1957.
Now you need also a 57  :D

I would guess he took over some of the Elsener contract as they were most likely pretty busy getting ready for the Alox revolution :)

As a very late and most likely pointless review .... he does very nice work this is my 'snappyest' 1951 and a very good level of fit and finish.

The seller thought it was not original as it was not a vic or an wenger so had quite a modest price on it :)

I didn't know about these. Those look like very nice knives. Is there any other way of getting one of the current knives without visiting the shop in Switzerland?

Was this an original design, or licensed from Victorinox?

Rothlisberger of Barau, was an official maker of the Swiss Soldier knife in two years, 1956 and 1957.  they also made red officer knives like the two in my photograph.

here are two videos about Rothlisberger knives featuring knives from my collection

thanks.  I had been aware of them because I had seen them shown on several lists of official makers of the soldier knife, but I did not know about their "ERINOX" officer knife until a collector and a friend in Switzerland told me about them.  I have since upgraded my example of the soldier knife to a nearly perfect specimen, I will attach a photo....but the red officer knives are even MORE rare.  I dont know of anyone else who has one, but I have seen one or two in various photographs.  I think that since they look so much like a Victorinox, there are probably a bunch of them stashed away in someones closet...hopefully nobody will discard one without realizing what they have!

thanks guys

Thanks for contributing your knowledge about these rare Rothlisberger pieces.  I really enjoyed watching Hobie's videos on them.
