Hatchet use today
on: April 06, 2021, 04:42:18 AM
Today, as has happened multiple times in the past, I got my sawmill headrig stuck. Sometimes I get a big log in there and simply bite off more than I can chew. Today it was only by a couple inches.

I keep a cheap no brand hatchet around for just this kind of occasional use. I can leave it out in the rain and not worry about it.

Anyway, it came through for me today, and I was able to hack my way out of trouble rather quickly.

Oops, I just realized I should have posted this in the Axe section. I'm sorry.  :-[

Anyway, some of you may be wondering why the end of the log is green. We paint the ends of the logs with a wax-based sealant to keep them from drying out too quickly before we get a chance to mill them.  This is a yellow poplar log.

:like: very interesting Jim, particularly to an office worker like me :tu:
Wasn’t always so, worked in maintenance for a few years as well as a bit of building work but some years ago now

I split a little wood in Victoria when I was in Edenhope. Bloke I stayed with in 1997 still had a wood burning hot water service and we cut firewood on his buzz saw behind the Fordson Power Major, then I split it in chunks.
