:mail: I finally landed a large red 91mm Michel Jordi Spartan model. Goes nicely with the red classic I already have.

Very nice!  How is the design applied to the scales?  It almost looks like an inlay.

I have been able to take some better photos lately and here are some of the US Military marked SAK's. I am still working on trying to get some better lighting. Might be good enough for SAKtivities photos?

might sound a silly idea but maybe try putting a piece of paper infront of your light source it might help get rid of the shine and make them look more evenly lit

OK, so like a diffuser of sorts? I really need to build some kind of light box.

Not always needed. I never use a light box. I just bounce my flash off a ceiling or far wall. I love my S5 IS due to the top mounted hot shoe. You do not want direct flash for this sort of photography. Diffuse the light and you should get better results. You can do this in several ways:

1. If your camera has an external hot shoe mount, place an accessory flash gun onto that mount and rotate the head anywhere but directly at the object you want to photograph. Experimenting with light direction is your best bet to find out what will give you the best even lighting.

2. If you have a compact camera with no hot shoe on the top of it, you can diffuse the direct flash by placing a white paper over it. I have found wax paper works great. Likewise, you can cut a slot in one of those old clear film canisters and mount that over the flash. Experiment with different papers etc.

3. Another thing to play with that I know also works...shoot through a circular fluorescent light if you can...or mount a circular fluorescent bulb over your photography area. This will bath the object under it in even lighting. Mount the camera on a tripod to take the shot without a flash, or use direct flash for that highlight effect.

4. Don't get me wrong, soft boxes have their place. However, you are still stuck tripod mounting the camera and not using the flash otherwise it will overpower your light box lighting. They are easy to build (once again, wax paper is great stuff), and you can use flashlights on the sides to control the lighting. A light box is used when you plan on using multiple light sources to try and even out or to give it that side shadow look for depth. I just find that other simpler methods give better easier results. To each their own though. There are no hard and fast rules in photography.

Thanks for the tips. I did have and use an older 35mm SLR Canon AE with good results. The shutter is giving problems and I would rather use a digital camera now anyway. I have compact Fuji Finepix cameras I have been using with top or front mounted flash. My wife just bought me a Nikon compact digital with front flash but I am not using it yet due to software compatibility issues.

Just how are you using/mounting wax paper over the flash to act as a diffuser? Just tape? Do you cut slits in it or leave it alone? I have had a few problems with macro photography with front mounted flash you end up with a dark spot in the lower left hand corner. Tried adding light to that area to help but it still looks dark there.
