Small Spy Capsule
on: December 10, 2007, 11:04:52 AM
Hi,

Anyone know where to buy Small Spy Capsule ?

I know that I can get it for free from EDCDepot.com when I order something there, but at this moment I only need the capsule.

Also, anyone has a picture to compare it's size? :) How big is the diameter and the length?

Thanks.

I think EDCDepot.com also has a few different sizes for sale as well.

Free one:

Interior diameter- 10.5mm
Interior depth- 27mm
Exterior diameter- 13.5mm
Exterior length (w/o cap)- 34mm
Exterior length (w/cap)- 49mm

Whistle:

Interior diameter- 8.5mm
Interior depth- 19mm
Exterior diameter- 12mm
Exterior length (w/o cap)- 47mm
Exterior length (w/cap)- 72.5mm

Compass:

Interior diameter- 13mm
Interior depth- 44mm
Exterior diameter- 15mm
Exterior length (w/o cap)- 57.5mm
Exterior length (w/cap)- 73mm

If you get the compass model, get it for the storage capacity- you really don't want to depend on the compass.  I am also certain that Marc at EDCDepot would be happy to work something out with you for just the capsule if that's all you really want.  Email him at marc@edcdepot.com and see- he's a good guy to deal with!

I have done land navigation and orienteering.  If a compass doesn't reliably settle or cannot be used for actual navigation(It doesn't have to be as precise as an orienteering compass.) then it is useless.  I got this on the review for the SAK Tool Chest and it takes up unecessary bulk.  Why have a compass if it doesn't actually server the purpose a compass is supposed to???  Good call on that.

I agree with you on that, a lot of cheapie compasses are more like general direction indicators, than something you can reliably navigate with ::)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

The compass model in this case has the most storage space, which might be important.  I thought about removing the compass since it's virtually useless, but then I though "Why bother?"

By the way, I was going to also show Imperial units for those metrically challenged, but I can never get all those different sized lines figured out properly.

Here's a size comparison picture with an SD card, Wenger S557 and Fisher Bullet Space Pen.

A general direction indicator is fine for a backup emergency navigation compass but if it doesn't rotate and settle reliably it isn't doing this.  A compass is something you have to rely on to point the same way every time.  A magnetic needle always does this but if it doesn't rotate and settle well it won't always point to magnetic north.  If you have to keep tapping it or something to get it pointing right how can you rely on it?

As Def said get it for the space.  This is one of the reasons I didn't get a Tool Chest and got the S557 instead.  From the reviews the compass doesn't really work reliably and takes up a lot of space.

I might be able to help you out.  Shoot me an email at marc@edcdepot.com.  Let me know what you are planning to put in the capsule.  Going up to the larger model may be a better choice depending on what you want to store in it.

Thanks for all the inputs :)

I think I will settle with this:

http://www.rei.com/product/685309

I like the size: 1.9" (48mm) x 0.6" (15mm) and quite cheap to buy some, but I hate the colors!

A little bit bigger compared to the free one from EDCdepot.

Or maybe this:

http://www.jazebra.com/pill-fob-magnum.html

Nice diameter size, but a little bit heavier I guess (and expensive compared to others). How much milligram is 1.2 oz?

Well, I plan to store only small stuffs, like allergic pill, other pills ... maybe emergency money, needle, small microsd card ...

Btw, how do you store your pills ? Do you let it loose ? or cut its plastic wrap as small as possible ?

PS: Thanks to Marc for your offer, I will (again) browse EDCdepot and think if I need something else.

I just drop an arthritis pill into mine for emergencies.  I thought about putting in cotton or some tissue to keep it from bouncing around too much but decided not to bother.  That kind of stuff just retains moisture anyway.

It's also great for that cyanide capsule in case you are caught behind the lines.

My friend and I bought several capsules from Sissn-N-Cr.  Good service, low prices.  Fast delivery.

pill storage = plastic wrap + aluminum foil - surround with a scrap of white packing foam if needed.

anyone ever make a 'hollow heel' secret compartment in their shoe? when i was about 10 i read an old popular mechanics magazine article by Dr Werner Von Braun telling how the Allied Spys did it and have always thought it would be neat to have ....
