OPINELS
on: August 16, 2011, 03:45:14 PM
Well thanks to Al (50ft-trad) and GojKan i now have a big opinel addiction, started with the #8 from Al via GojKan from serbia  :tu: and has just gone from one opinel to now 7  :o these have to be one of the best bang for the buck knives out there, untill i got one i wasnt sure but now im addicted, there great for doing small jobs in the kitchen and bigger jobs in the garden, great slicing knives due to there thin V grind blade, they are easy to sharpen , and bonus for me as not my best skill  :D and they hold a edge pretty well, what more can i say but thanks guys for the introduction to a great little frenchy  ;)

there handy in the kitchen lol

I am very interested in buying one. I think it would be perfect to throw in my tackle box for fishing and one in my hunting backpack.

@Zed,
Nice collection Mate  :salute:

@Captain,
Opinals are great but try to store them somewhere dry when you have finished with them as the handles can swell a bit and make them hard to open

Mine stays indoors when I've finished with it now   :tu:

@Mat,
I can't believe you don't have one yet  :ahhh

Looking good mate  :tu: you do take some good pics BTW
I've only got a couple of No 6's right now but Opinels are simply fantastic - light, simple, effective and cheap

I like Opinels but I'm always perturbed at how they come about.  Some of you may already know this but they're actually harvested from the bones of French giants  :-\

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Amici,
Ditto's on the collection. As a WW2 reenactor, I have found that an Opinel is the perfect addition to any European based impressions personal kit for a good, solid, and working period folding knife.

From it's weight, ability to retian and keep a good edge, to it's simplicity of design plus it's ingenious locking system. It's also a superior tool that definitely was ahead of it's time, especially when it comes to the KISS philosophy.

Cheers,
Serge

Opinels are great knives!

Easy modded, easy maintained, great users!

To avoid wood swelling you can take it apart (which is not so hard) and dip it in some natural oil/turpentine mixture...

I have a 8 and 9 Carbon steel, the 8 is scratched up, so I'm going to buy a number 8 SS as a back up while I'm still in Europe!

How does that locking mechanism work?  ??? The collar twists up?

It doesn't twist toward the blade, but it does rotate to where the lip of the collar prevents the tang from vertical movement, thereby locking the blade in place.  Newer Opinels have a cutout on the handle-side, too, to allow locking the blade closed, too.  This, of course, only applies to the Opinels that have the locking collar.

the lock is a fantasticly solid lock that is very basic in idea but works so well, no pics yet but the SS #8 is so pretty, im not sure on what wood the handle on mines is as thought it was beech like the others but its much lighter in colour  :think:

I love opinels but hate the wood handles. Anyone have any links to where I can get the ones with plastic or other non-shrinking handles?  :tu:

Are you sure you aren't thinking about the Peasant Knife, GG?  I don't think Opinel (the company itself) has non-wood handle Opinel knives? :think:

I knew I had seen some somewhere....

I need to get a stainless stell one, the Carbon steel ones I have are not really suitable, in my opinion, for cutting food.
