Am I the only one that doesn't "get it" with Opinels? Can someone enlighten me why they are so popular?  :)

Seven reasons, that in combination, make the Opinel a world-class knife. Probable why they make millions of knives a year.  :tu:

I read somewhere just recently that in the number of knives produced per year, Opinel is the second largest knife producer next to victorinox. Only Vic makes more knives per year than Opinel. I think the figure for Opinel was like 8 million knives per year.

This is a huge number considering how popular the Buck 110 was in the 1970's and on, and they only celebrated the 10 millionth Buck 110 recently. In other words, Opinel makes almost more knives every year than it took Buck since 1963 to make that many 110's.

Opinel; the under estimated giant of the cutlery industry!
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Now that's surprising, especially since I still run into people that don't know the name.......

I remember them becoming available locally in my teens, always thought they were ridiculously expensive.......which they were then compared to Okapis

I agree with what you said with one exception.

As of 2013 Buck Knives had sold over 15 million Buck 110's.(that was 5 years ago...I have not seen the current total)

This is a quote from a 2013 article by the Hendon Media group about the
50th Anniversary Buck Model 110 Folding Hunter:

"The Model 110 lockblade literally revolutionized the knife industry. The big folder put Buck Knives at the top of the industry, just exactly like the Model T did for Ford. Ford made 15 million Model T cars, and Buck has made 15 million Model 110 knives produced since 1964…and counting."

That being said I will agree with your statement:

"Opinel; the under estimated giant of the cutlery industry!"

Is there any truth to the No. 8 being Ernest Hemingway's favorite knife?  I know he spent considerable time in France after the First World War so it would make sense.

That would be a fun fact. I'm a big Hemingway fan, but I'm not familiar with his knife selections. As an avid sportsman, he must have had a few. An Opi would seem like a natural choice for him.

Research time!

Hemingway, in his literature, makes several references to a 'Jackknife', but keeps it ambiguous from there, as far as I can tell.

A Paris cutlery shop claims to have a reproduction of Hem's favorite companion knife here:

http://www.kindal.fr/le-hemingway_1,fr,8,14.cfm

If your French is good, here's a bit more verbiage and some cool pictures:

https://www.lesrhabilleurs.com/kindal-hemingway/

It looks like the kind of knife Hem might carry, but at somewhere around $1000, I think I'll stick with a SAK and maybe an Opi Nº09.

I don't think the story of Hemingway's knife ends here.

Did he prefer an Opinel when he was younger and driving an ambulance in WW I?

What did he carry aboard Pilar?

What did he carry when hunting out in Sun Valley?

What evidence do we have that Hem even carried a Kindal custom?

It's all a bit tenuous at this point.
