Looks like there is a slot on the back of the metal ferrule.  A metal piece or maybe a spring seems to rotate with the blade to act as a detent to hold the blade open or closed.  Not like a Laguiole, but maybe a similar action.  Definitely designed as a rule beater, I would think.  Not really a lock.  Maybe it looks 'safer' with that rounded tip and the absence of a nasty old Virobloc.  Best wishes.  G

I think it's interesting but good old fashioned Virobloc tech works for me!

The Opinel in its classic form is one of those things that just works for me. But for legal reasons, it may not work for others. It's good to see Opinel simultaneously looking for a work-around and trying something new.

I think it is way past time for Opinel to offer a line of synthetic handle knives.  Might not appeal to the French, and definitely not traditional, but I bet they would sell like hotcakes.  No more sticky blades and something you could wash out over a faucet.  Best wishes.  G

Interesting thought!😕

I have two synthetic Opinel knifes, a No8 and a No9 DIY.

They function as intended. But, they lack character to prepare veggies, or slice meat in preparation of a meal.

The Opinel handles in what ever wood you select, provides an individual knife, one of a kind, just as that user of the blade.

Cleaning is not an issue, dribbling mineral oil in the blade slot and allowing it to coat the pivot, is just part of the care needed to maintain the knife.

No more and no less the care I exercise to care for a cast iron skillet.

My SS blades see action around food prep and my Carbon blades are utilized most outdoors.

A No6 Walnut is easy to carry, a No7 blade handles many tasks better than the No6.   Yet, a No9, is the most comfortable in my XXL hands.

Damn, if not for Barry’s teasing shares, I would never had the experience using this knife makers products. Or, would offer such a commentary.

I do wish Opinel success with this new endeavor. As it is been proven if you do not try, you do not improve.

Stand by as I slip my soap box back into the closet!😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

 Gordon!  I do have to say my synthetic handled Opinels, the same that you have, are painless to maintain.  I keep the No. 8 Outdoor in my pack and the DIY on my stand.  Still, nothing tops the beautiful wooden handles.

This is my lunch kit. It's a No. 8 but in stainless.

Again,  darn it !!! That is were my beech No8 is!!!  In the lunch kit roll ready for the next outing.😎

I thought I misplaced it and left behind…

Thank you

PS: My Outdoor is in my waist pack for two reasons,
 1. The  Whistle is better than the Signal’s.
2. It is lighter than my Swiss Army OHTrekker.

 Mrs. R knows what to get me on birthdays and Christmas Gordon

Mine too, for exactly those reasons.  I have one of the No. 12 Explore knives, but I just can't warm up to it.  It's a good idea, but that Explore is better in my opinion.

Funny, I have one sitting in my PROMOTIONS Folder too!

Each time I select this subject, I receive a new daily Opie ad.  AI at work.   Or Big Brother is now monitoring AWL!😉

I’m not sure I believe laws against locking knives are the only or even primary driver of the new No. 06 design.

If I wanted a No. 06 that couldn’t lock, the logical thing would be to get the only slightly smaller No. 05, which doesn’t have the Virobloc ring.  In spite of the smaller handle, the edge length on the No. 05 is comparable to a 91mm or 84mm SAK.

Whatever the reason, I’m glad to see Opinel trying some new things, even if not exactly as I would have done them.

Top to bottom:

Opinel No. 05

I just got one of those kits a few weeks ago. It actually works rather well. The fork is just long enough for me to be able to use it separately from the knife, in case I need it to hold whatever I'm cutting.

I had one of the painted handled No. 8's and I actually didn't have any trouble with the blade getting tight when it got wet. So, in case someone want's to keep it traditional, but doesn't want to deal with the swelling issue, those are an option.

That would be correct, the COLARAMA models is a different wood, a tight grain, and the paint seals the wood to help prevent he grain from being exposed to observe moisture.

What a beauty this is - Opinel No. 9 DIY
Interestingly the blade has a different shape from the normal Opinel blade.
And of course we have the two screwdriver bits, and the wire stripper notches. A true Multitool!!   :tu:   :D

Think this is going to live in my regular tools tool box.

Thanks lads - Very happy - I do like Opinels   :D

One thing I forgot to mention: On one side of the blade there was a burr,
You know .... the one that comes when you sharpen the other side!! I guess it was not quite finished off properly.

No big deal, of course, and  easily removed with a strop or gentle stone, or in my case that Victorinox 'pen' sharpener, which is on my desk.

For those that are interested, the Neo 6 is available on the US Opinel site:

https://www.opinel-usa.com/pages/neo6

I broke my Carbon 7 a couple weeks ago, so I might be tempted to grab a Neo 6 instead. (Or along with a No 7 ::))

Nice one, Barry.  I personally wouldn't mind seeing all of the woodies with the tube/grommet lined hole in the handle like the Neos.  It isn't obtrusive, if you don't use it, and lots neater than just a drilled hole or making a hole yourself.  Best wishes.  G
