USA made/manufactured Spydies.
on: August 08, 2011, 08:29:48 PM
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me which of the Spyderco models are made AND manufactured in the U.S.?

I got a Tenacious a few mos. ago and really like it, and I want to get another Spydie, but I would prefer to buy one that's made here in the US, and I don't mean just assembled from parts.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I have an Endura and a Delica and both are made in Seiki City, Japan.

I also want to know what models are 100 percent made in the USA.

Find a webstore that carries a lot of spydercos (I like WarriorsandWonders.com in Canada) and just look up "Golden".  Every Spyderco made in the US will have "Made in Golden, Colorado, Earth" somewhere in the description.

The USA made models tend to be a bit pricier than the Tenacious, but IMO are worth the extra.
I would look at the Paramilitary2, or any of the Military variants. If you are looking for something a little more affordable, look at the Manix2. For the most part the S30v, 154cm, and carpenter steels are made in the US. (with the notable exception of the Sage series).
If you can afford it though the para2 is probably one of the best production EDC folders available.

US-made Spydies are marked with "Golden Colorado Earth" and will have usually have a CPM steel like s30v.  The Military, Para-Military and s30v Natives are US-made.

VG-10 Spydies are made in Japan.

8Cr13Mov Spydies are made in China.

Excuse my ignorance but why does it matter?

Are they not built to Spyderco's specifications?

For me, it's because some people still like to support what little of a knife industry we have left. ;)

Others seem to have this strange notion that everything built in the USA is just better. :D

We soon simply will not have to worry about it. The USA will have nothing made here. I guess that would make some people happy.  :-\  It's a shame that nobody cares anymore. It will be a sad day when I walk into an antique store someday and all the products are from China.

Thanks for the info.  I've been looking at a Manix.

It matters to me because the money I spend on a U.S. made product means I'm keeping people employed here, and voting with my dollars to tell companies that I want them to employ our own people.

It really chaps my hide that political conservatives in our government spew about how they won't allow new taxes so as to supposedly create new jobs, but what they're really doing is defending the Bush-era tax cuts for corporations to off-shore manufacturing and technical jobs, and that the money they're saving from doing so isn't being reinvested in those companies, it's going in shareholder's pockets instead.  Those corporate tax breaks ARE creating new jobs; in China and India, not in the U.S.

Enough soap-boxing from me now; I've said my peace and will leave it at that.

I suppose it's good you have a choice. I don't think there are many industries left in the UK  :-\

I guess that's what makes the likes of Leatherman special  :salute:

So another question; why do Spyderco make some stuff in the US but others they outsource to China, Japan, etc.?
Is it all down to cost and price point?

Part of why Spyderco manufactures overseas has to do with price points. In the case of the Tenacious line, in order to keep costs low they have to build in China. The majority of it is compromise, as the Japanese knives show. However certain rules regarding import/export of materials also apply. ZDP-189 for example can only be exported from Japan as a finished product, so any knives using this steel have to be made in Japan. At the same time American steels from carpenter and crucible are not worth exporting for assembly. The exception to all of the standard logic is the Sage series, which is made with American steel and assembled in Taiwan. If I recall the reason it is done in Taiwan is that Sal could not get any other factories to build the knife with the materials he wanted and to the specs he required. (Japanese factories did not want to use imported steel, American manufacturing would have nearly doubled the price).

I should note that both VG-10 and ZDP-189 have that export restriction.  Only finished knives are allowed out of Japan using those steels.
