I've been doing a lot of walking recently with my partner and daughter, and very occasionally, my son. I even thought to take some pics along the way....

This rock formation in the Derbyshire Peak District is known locally as "The 5 Clouds":

Here's the missus being attacked by a gang of killer sheep - somewhere below the 5 Clouds:

One of the clouds:

This is a route we took to the top of Kinder Scout, a high plateau in the Dark Peak District. The Five clouds above are in the "White Peaks" where the rocks are predominately granite and limestone, whereas the Dark peaks take their name from dark peat covering:

Looking back from the top of Kinder Scout:

Atop Kinder are many weird, often comical rock formations where erosion has been at work since the last ice age - here's just one example of literally hundreds and my kids taking full advantage......

North Wales now, Snowdonia National Park in an area known a Cwm Idal. By British standards this is pretty wild!

Cwm Idal again. The crevasse at top-centre, above the boulder field is known as "The Devil's Kitchen", and is about 2 miles from the camera to give you an idea of scale.

I've a few more similar to post when I can be bothered to upload them from the camera!
I used to come here a lot.

Beautiful shots Dave! :tu: That Cwm Idal (how is it pronounced actually?) looks like a quite tranquil place. It's been a while since I last hiked or anything so I'm overly jealous. :D

Cwm Idal is Welsh (which I'm not), but I think it's pronounced Cum Eedal. Once you get near the peaks, it's very tranquil, although it's almost crowded lower down. Walk for an hour or two, and you generally don't see two many people, just lots of sheep!

Funny. My area looks just like Smitty's, with lots of trees overhead and everywhere you look. Compare that to some of DaveK's shots which have no trees for as far as the eye can see. It seems almost like an alien landscape to me. :)

Would have been a nice shot if it wasn't for that snowboarder :twak: Oh well, adds some colour I suppose.

I went for a walk with the two ladies in my life today, starting and ending at Foxton Locks in Leicestershire. The lock system comprises 10 locks, all of which are still in use in the traditional way, 200 years later. There aren't many of man's inventions that haven't been improved in two centuries!

Some piccies, and I'll probably add few more on my blog later. Hope you like them

Now that is a small lock system.

:o I thought it was pretty big myself! I certainly wouldn't have wanted to dig it myself with the technology available in 1809! :D

Or did you mean the width? They sure are narrow, hence most canal boats being known as "narrowboats"! Obviously, they only exist for pleasure these days, but in their heyday, the canals were the arteries of Britain through the industrial revolution. It's all rather humbling really...

It just ocurred to me that in the first picture, you can see a woman in shorts, with a pink jacket tied around her waist and another woman opposite, and between them they are helping to get a narrowboat and third (onboard) member of their party into the second from last lock. It turns out that they were Canadian!

Nice pics Dave. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed them Eddie :tu:

I was talking about the width. In fact, I find that canal system endearing and lovable.

Around here, we have huge locks designed for Great Lakes Freighters which incidentally are longer and larger than most ocean going freighters.

In fact, the Ontario lock is only used for pleasure craft now as it is too small for the newer freighters.

Here is the Soo lock on the Canadian side...

And a virtual tour...

Today, all commercial traffic goes through the American locks.

Not for bigger boats perhaps but certainly an impressive design is the Falkirk Wheel here in Scotland.

Thanks mate although I think the first one is a bit mundane.  I kinda felt that I should put up more than one shot that didn't involve the macro button in a thread called "Scenery" though. :)
