Any Love for the 84/91mm Vic Combo Tool
on: August 29, 2011, 07:59:06 AM
I got my first 84mm Vic last week, a Waiter model. I really like this knife a lot. It's a great tool to have in your pocket when you're making dinner and having drinks with friends, which is one of my favorite pastimes. It's also my first experience with the combo tool and I have to say I'm very impressed with it. What surprised me the most was how effective it is on phillips screws. It's a little awkward but gets the job done with some finesse. It's definitely a "jack of all trades, master of none" and is right on the edge of being useable as a can opener, but its pretty impressive how much functionality the design packs into one small implement. I'm diggin' the combo tool, anyone else?

Now that's some Combo Tool love :salute:

It's definitely a light use screwdriver, being as thin as it is.

Might be cool if Vic made something similar which was a whole layer wide, then you could have a sturdy combo tool across from, for instance, a magnifying glass

I'm loving the waiter :D

Well, once upon a time, they used a standard bottle opener- the combo tool wasn't in existence yet. I think a 91mm version of the Apprentice using with the bottle opener would be the bomb, honestly.

I love the standard pry tool which can also be used as a flat screwdriver.  In the last 11 years of EDC I have even opened 2 or 3 bottles with it.  I also like the standard can opener which I find easy to use and does a very clean & safe job (no ragged edges) on the can.
The combo tool seems to be an inferior version of the pry tool & can opener - but when you want to make something useful that is also smaller & slimmer then what can you do?  It seems to me that the combo tool is a pretty clever compromise even if it is a lighter duty pry tool than the standard one and not as good a can opener.  At least if you are camping and have a can with tasty food inside then the combo tool CAN open it - that is the most important thing!  And if you are in a rescue situation with some Stella Artois trapped in a bottle then you can free it, saving the day!  You can pry to some degree and at least wont need to risk breaking the tip off your blade.

I don't currently have a SAK with a combo tool, until my Bantam arrives (thanks to Jackknife on SOSAK) anyway.  The Bantam is a good example of a SAK that really does benefit greatly from the combo tool - when you go that small & slim then saving a layer is VERY noticeable.

The Compact was the first SAK I bought. I've used that little combo tool for all kinds of things, even some light prying.
Opens beer bottles with ease too. ;)

Now that I know how much I like the combo tool, the Vic Compact is looking mighty appealing :)

Hey Modders, is it possible to swap an awl for the hook? While I'm not a hook hater, I would much prefer an awl instead, though I believe this is one of the hooks with a file, which is a definite plus, I'd still much prefer a pokey, drilly thing.

I believe the awl is thinner than the hook as well so there would be a slight gap but I don't see how that would much affect the functionality of the tool.

While I've very flattered that my 'Huntsman Slim' mod has made your list it was, so far as I know, never a production piece.  That aside it seems a very comprehensive list to me and I certainly can't think of anything missing.

Welcome to the forum.

I saw the "Slim" at the SOSAK web site. I will update my list and put it under a "Mod" classification.  :tu:
I could not find an official listing at the SAKWiki site.

91mm:
Mechanic Jr (2-layer: combo + large blade + pliers; Celidor black and red)
Special Mechanic (Meyer Binding Pliers Tool)
Lumberjack w/ corkscrew (needs confirmation)

The first two (Mechanic Jr and Special Mechanic) are the same knife. The knife doesn't actually have a *real* Victorinox marketing name that I know of, the ones made were special runs for either Radio Shack in the mid 1990s (sold under their TechLine name) or Meyer (late 2000s). In both cases they have the same tool config (blade, combo, pliers, phillips), the only difference the Techline versions have plus scales and Meyer versions do not.

Regarding the Lumberjack, I think I gave you this one on the SOSAK board. What confirmation do you need? Whether they exist, or whether they're 91mm? They do exist (I have one) and they are 91mm. HTH.

Yes, I added the 91mm Lumberjack to the list according to your post on the SOSAK board.
The confirmation note I have there is regarding the 91mm Lumberjack being a regular Victorinox product,
as opposed to a special order or mod.
Since it has a corkscrew, I assume that it has Celidor scales, maybe with tweezers and toothpick.

SAKWiki.com does not have a Lumberjack listed under the 91mm knives. Under the 84mm Lumberjack entry, there is a reference to a 91mm Big Lumberjack with philips screwdriver on the back, as a special run for Swiss Bianco. It is in my list in the Swiss Bianco section.

I could not find any Lumberjack (84mm or 91mm) on the Victorinox catalogs I  have (2001, 2003, 2006, 2011). I know the 84mm exists, I have two 84mm Ecoline Lumberjacks.

I also have the Compact and the DofE. Whilst I have not yet used the combo tool, I shall try it on a can soon enough, maybe wearing a kevlar glove....
