Eastwing rehandle
on: August 30, 2011, 05:05:21 AM
I contacted the company and they said they don't rehandle axes or hammers (safety policy). So I figured I would do it myself. Anyone ever do this? Any tips or tricks? Same as this one : http://www.google.com/m/search?oe=UTF-8&client=safari&q=estwing+axe+pictures&te=8&hl=en&site=images&tbm=isch#i=8
Thanks.

Edit: estwing sorry.

I have something that I have started to handle like an Estwing  ;)

I think the thing you will need is a 'vice' to squash the leather disks down
I have seen it done with bits of wood, threaded rod and nuts
and on another forum some one made one from a sealant gun  :tu:

Good luck with it Steve

Have a look for guides on scandi style leather stacked handles, like this one.  It's a long guide and I've not read it all, but I'm guessing there's going to be some useful tips in there. :)

Why not just get the leather handle version?
http://www.amazon.com/Estwing-E24A-Sportsmans-Hatchet-Handle/dp/B0002JT0BO
Unless you want a different pattern of spacers, in which case the leather handle washers are easier to pull off than the vinyl is and you can number them and use them for templates or reapply them with your spacer pattern. I have an Estwing waiting for a orange G10 stacked washer handle and the washers pulled right off once I ground off the rivet heads.

I have a new one of those. I just want to fix the old one too. ;)

So taking all this in it will be a custom handle now. I think I'll use a combination of g10, leather, and wood.

Do I glue the sections together or just a solid press fit? Also what kind of sealer/finish do they put on the handle. Thanks.

The Guy in the tutorial that Gareth posted used glue on his handle and there's a bit about the finish there as well  Steve  :tu:

I have only started my leather handle, so far I have a tin half full of little leather squares  :)

Just remembered that Ray Mears briefly covers this style of handle making in one of his programs.  He certainly glues all the layers.
