It's not uncommon for the handles to have mismatched dates but this is the only one that I've seen that's missing a date on one handle.  The ones with the mismatched dates are usually only a month or two apart.  It suggests that your PST may have been from one of the earliest batches of PSTs with manufacture dates. That's neat!

Does anyone have a PST with mismatched dates on the handles that are more than one to two months apart?   Can we narrow down our estimate to December 1992 or 1-2 months earlier?   It's not proven but I think it's strongly suggested.  Mike D's PST is sorta like the missing link!  I wouldn't get rid of it... but if you want... I may know someone who'd be interested in purchasing it. ;)  :P :D

I appreciate the offer, but this tool's got so many memories tied to it for me I'd be hard pressed to ever sell it.

I'd be disappointed in you if you did sell it!  I was just playin'.  ;)

Hi,

I have two PST's with the date stamp only on one handle.  One is a black oxide PST with the date code of 0593 and the other is a SS PST with cap crimper having the date code of 0193.

Best - Joe

I've got a black oxide PST cap crimper with one blank handle, and 0494 in the other.  :-\

Hi,

I have two PST's without date codes stamped in the handle that are still in boxes.  One box has a 1985 date and the other a 1990 date.  I'm sure that these boxes were made in large enough quantities that they'd be used for several years.

Anyone else with undated PST's in dated boxes?

Joe

I have a riveted PST with the blade marked LEATHERMAN, not LEATHERMAN JAPAN. Of the other 3 Pst's I have the earliest date stamped is 95.

I also have boxes dated 1985 and 1990 from PSTs without date codes.

I have a riveted PST with the blade marked LEATHERMAN, not LEATHERMAN JAPAN.

Is it marked "Leatherman" or "Leatherman USA" on the pliers?

There are two ongoing auctions for PSTs that I found interesting:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190186819792
I'm the "leatherman speSmurfpillst"  ::)  that politely suggested it wasn't "circa 1983-1984" after viewing additional photos (see attachments below).  This one has a clip blade and gnurled screws but according to the seller it has an inches only rule on the handle (I haven't seen a photo of the rule).  This could possibly be another "missing link" that helps explain the progression of the PST.

One of these three is a riveted PST.  Although the tang stamp doesn't show in the photo, I have a hunch that this one isn't marked Japan.
