Been brainstorming what to do next and I thought of another MT that would help me in my day to day crafting etc.

I present, The Sartorialist. No, this isn't Scott Schuman packed into a MT, although I've borrowed his blog's name (thesartorlist.blogspot.com), this MT will assist me in my ongoing efforts to learn how to sew and produce fashion items. After shooting and being in the fashion photography industry for half a decade, I decided to learn how to produce the items that I so carefully documented year after year.

Sartorial: of or relating to a tailor or tailored clothes; broadly: of or relating to clothes

I started slowly by learning how to hem pants, making little pouches and customizing my photography gear but I have been getting into more and more garment designs and I want a tool to match that effort. It's atypical of what most MTO members do, but I can't assume that. Just have to remember that it's a sewing MACHINE..haha.

As with all MPC custom MTs, this isn't really a show off thread, but more of a documentation thread so I can, as can you, track the progress, trials and tribulations.

These are the items and tools I want to incorporate into The Sartorialist, utilizing a Charge TTi as a platform.

1. A seam ripper
2. A chalk pen holder or a chalk marker holder
3. long awl/poker (for pushing out corners, likely adapted a ground down saw)
4. An awl (inside opening, stronger and sharper)
5. a threader (this'll be tricky, they are super delicate, I may be able to steal a lesson from the GRFXman and use the bit holder and adapt it into it)
6. tweezers (also will be tricky, I've tried on several occasions to adapt a pair and always failed)
7. a small pincushion ( where the file would be, outside openin. Think...pins at an angle, lined up and in a row)
8. Scissors, not sure if I will use a pait of SAK ones or keep the inside opening one, they are only for cutting threads on the machine. There is no way to actually incorporate a full size pair of shears, nor do i want to)
9. a pattern tracing wheel (this is optional, not sure if it'll fit)

This one will take a bit of time to make, I start a new job (yay! finally a place for the mighty GRFXman and I) on Tuesday and the numerous parts that need to be fabbed will slow things down.

Here we go!

Sounds like a multitool version of the Wenger Bernina knife. :) I wonder if you could find a small circular cutter like that to mount in one of the outboard stations on a Charge? It really works quite well. :)

oooo.

ok, despite my fondness for the s30v knife and having a knife all the time, I am going to remove the knife and then replace it with the 18mm rotary knife. I'll have to build a holder for the knife, but it's far more useful for textiles than the straight blade.

Also the Bernina, which has become a very good source for ideas has a mag glass with a magnetized screw drive tip for picking up needles. Pretty easy to replicate, if not the mag glass but for sure the magnetize tip.

Why not remove the pliers and add a full size set of scissors?
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Hard to generate a spring action, and the shears I use are 8" long. You want LONG flowing cuts, no short 3-4" ones. So, instead of half assing it, I'd rather not.

Pliers are useful for other things, hardware and notion related.

Additional things might be in the pin cushion are a quick set of needle and thread so I can take it on the road and have a kit with me.

Looks like that 18mm rotocutter is going to be a fabrication challenge. I'll be interested in seeing how you pull it off.

The Sartorialist - Rotary Cutter & Tracer brainstorm.
Reply #17 on: September 06, 2011, 06:07:24 AM
I think I figured out how to incorporate both the rotary cutter AND the pattern spikey wheel.

They are roughly the same size, about 18-19 mm so what I plan to do is put them on the SAME tool, side by side, like a pair of turn tables. Then make a pivot in the middle between them and they can orbit around the pivot. That way, it's just a flip and it's either spikey tracing wheel or rotary cutter.

There should be a lot of real estate, I maybe able to hide the wire needle threader in this tool too.

Most rotary cutters I have seen so far have a retractable cover, no need for this one since its going to hide within the tool when closed.

Here's a mock up of what I am trying to explain.

More to come soon.

The rotary cutter/pattern cutter with the rotating head- get the patent application in NOW.

My grandmother sewed. My mother sews. My crazy aunt owns a sewing supply store. My roommate's mother sews. My quick to declare manliness roommate sews (tactical nylon only, but...). I've never not been around stitchers, and I've never seen a tool like this.

Definitely get the patent going. I sent the drawing to my mom, who's at the top of the costume design game, with the headline, "What do you think of this?" and no other descriptions and her response was, "Trace the pattern, remove the pattern, flip the wheels and cut the fabric. Anything that takes another tool off my cutting table is a win. Where do I buy one?"

I may be on to something....clearly. I don't even know where I can file for IP or Patent rights....

It's totally going to work! Here's a mock up.

Uh-oh. :( Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Eric, but I just rembered that a sewing-based plier multitool has already been done. :-\ And its quite a piece of ...work, too. ::) I dare say, you'll have a hard time getting the quality of your tool to match that of the CUTTERFLY! :ahhh :D :D

I puked a little bit in my mouth just now.....

Just you wait...this'll take a while but the Sartorialist WILL destroy the Cutterfly....

Where did you find said tool? The mechanism for the cutter maybe something to look into.
