  • Hello...is this thing on?
I'm bored and was wondering how i could rearrange my desk, and then i thought i wonder what the "average"* multitool.org member uses to prop up their computer. Here's mine to start the ball rolling...

*i say average when we all know non of us are average; we are in fact all completely nuts

Ta, two monitors for my main computer, then the little one on the right for my Lego Computer and the stand on the left with my headphones on is for my TabletPC, the great thing is i can control them all with the one keyboard and mouse you can see. The annoying thing is that the two black monitors belong to two of my house mates, i'm just borrowing them :( (really want to get myself a proper pair of matching monitors (well ideally 3 would be nice!!))

I find it really hard to go back to using 1 monitor after having used 2 for so long. It comes in really handy for so many things (even work :O)

My workspaces?  Terribly messy I know, but this is what I have at the moment.

The first one is what I call "Def" because it's my main computer, where I do most of my work.  It's an AMD 3500+ with 1.5G RAM, LG DVD burner, several hard drives, Logitech media keyboard and cordless mouse, HP printer/scanner/copier, wireless router and terra cotta squirrel.

This one is "OtherDef" because it's my other computer.  This is the canned HP machine that gave me so much trouble a while back.  It's got a really nice no name keyboard (keys feel really nice on it) 19" BiewSonic LED monitor, 250G internal drive and a couple of external drives.  It has a Microsoft Blue cordless mouse that I was never really fond of.  At twice the price of my Logitech mouse, it was replaced four times under warranty before I got one that worked well enough.  Stick with Logitech people! :P

I forgot to mention that Def has a 22" widescreen monitor that I love!

Thanks guys- the cost of the widescreens has dropped so much recently that I had to get one to replace my ailing 17" CRT monitor.  I got that one on clearance from Staples for under $300.

The squirrel is the result of an odd story that could happen to no one else but me....

Lastly, this is "DefMobile" which I use at wireless hotspots and all over the house when I want to be connected but am not at the computer.  It's an iPAQ 2495 safely tucked inside an Otterbox 1900 which protects it from pretty well everything.  Now that you have all seen it, always be concerned that while chatting with me on Messenger, I may be in the shower! :P

DefMobile will also be supplemented by the new Dell laptop I am still waiting for!

While i do like big monitors for watching films etc, i would still rather have 2 smaller ones than 1 big one even if they had the same combined resolution (of course if someone offered me 2 big monitors i wouldnt say no!!)

Wouldn't a built in air conditioner make the mouse heavy and chew through batteries like there's no tomorrow?  That having been said, it does look really cool, no pun intentded!

This 22" was the first monitor I have ever bought- the rest I have managed to pick up here and there.  The 17" was picked up by my wife's cousin at the city auctions.  She works for the city and I gave her some money and told her to grab anything that looked interesting.  She called later and asked if I wanted a 17" monitor and I told her yes, because I was still using 15" ones.  This was about two years ago, and I used that monitor for a long time and I thought it was great.

Last spring it started acting up and I started to think about picking up an LCD monitor as they were starting to come down in price.  This was about a month before I went to visit my parents, and my father told me not to bother buying one as they had a "spare" 19" LCD I could take when I went there.  Naturally I was excited as my 17" only had 16" viewable area (CRT's lose an inch due to the frame) so a 19" would be a huge improvement.  My wife was so pleased when we got home and set it up because it took up almost no deskspace (which eventually got covered in junk!) that she fully supported me when I started looking at another LCD.

Up until I got the 19" LCD, OtherDef was still using a 15" CRT, then inherited the 17" when the 19" LCD showed up.  Now that Def has the widescreen and OtherDef has the 19", I don't think I ever want to go back to CRT's!

Widescreens are still a bit of a pain as the whole world is still set up for standard screen, which leaves a lot of blank space when surfing.  The nice thing is if you alter the window to look like a standard screen you have lots of space on the side to work like a second monitor to watch movies or participate in chats.

Plus I can post BIG pictures and not have to scroll side to side! :D  And Unreal Tournament 2004 (still don't have the new one yet) looks awesome!

No the mouse don't go through batteries as it doesn't take any, it is a USB corded mouse, not a wireless one (or else yes, I would think it would go through the batteries extremely quickly). I've liked it since day one, the cold air on your hands is a bit of a gimmick but it made me buy one  :D

I have a standard 19" TFT, but my next one (whenever this one breaks) will be a widescreen, as they look a bit better than standards and are becoming the norm in most places now.

Trouble with gaming at such high resolutions is that it requires a much better graphics card! (unless the game is a bit older, in which case you can get away with it!) But yeah it does look good if you have the computer to cope with it!
